Hello, I would like to purchase rustic or hacienda type furniture to be shipped back to my home in Florida. I am looking for a reliable store or factory with quality pieces at a reasonable price. Also a carpenter that can do some unique custom work such as wooden panels sculpted in relief and wooden filigree panels that can be used in doors. Has anyone had personal experience with a particular store in Guad or Tonalá? Any suggestions are appreciated. Thank you. James L. Castner

If you don’t have experience with furniture built in Mexico, be very careful that the woods you choose are cured and without bugs. There are shops all over Tonala and if you play your cards correctly, you can often find out where the factories are by asking.

Hi Neil, thanks for your quick reply to my post. I agree with what you said, and I have visited Tonalá and observed that there were lots of furniture places. That is one of the reasons that I was looking for someone with personal experience at a given store or factory. Have you dealt with any of the ones on the list that you provided? When we had a home in Mexico, most of our furniture came from Tonala but a majority of it was custom built wrought iron. We aren’t fans of the typical “rustica style” furniture with loose fitting drawers, doors and shelves. While we haven’t purchased from any of the links I provided, we have visited the first link listed and felt that his furniture was above the norm in quality. A fair number of pieces of furniture we have here in Albuquerque were purchased from a manufacturer in Patzcuaro. The owner is a Gringo and his factory builds more to US standards for finish and fit. I also visited a custom furniture manufacturer in Sayula who builds exclusively with mesquite and parota and does so with higher quality finish details.
After some struggle, I just found another outfit which is on the edge of Tonala and we have threatened many times to go here since I though they just might have some interesting products:

If you are interested in anything of wrought iron and leather, there is a relatively new outfit in Tonala that has soom outstanding items. No website but I think I can explain where their main store is if you are interested.

They do make doors and I think you can see from the carving on the buffets, they could probably handle any door needs you might have?

Neil, I’ll visit the links you provided tonight. I know the place in Sayula and have that on my list of places to visit when I get down to Mexico in a couple of weeks. I like the look of mesquite but am not familiar with what parota looks like. Is it the wood with dark splotches in the grain? I’m afraid that going all mesquite would be too expensive. For reasons of safety/security, I have been warned about visiting Patzcuaro this time. I have been there in the past and was very impressed with some of the furniture and carved columns in the hotels. Beautiful work. Does the gringo-owned factory there have a website?
The Ornelas name sounds familiar and I think I have a business card from them. I’ll check out the link to their site as well. I really like wrought iron for decorative items such as candle holders, doors/gates, but not particularly on furniture. And the equipale furniture is the only kind I dislike outright.
Thank you for all your help and suggestions. Have you ever dealt with a furniture company called La Colección in Tlaquepaque?

When I was in Michoacan recently I visited a small town near Patzcuaro called Cuanajo. I hope the links below work. The town had a number of shops making furniture, these shots are from my favourite shop.

Hi, Unfortunately the links still do not work for me. I tried both clicking on them, and cutting/pasting into the address field. Perhaps it has something to do with the Google Chrome browser I am using? Someone else was king enough to send me Picasa albums of his trip and it took a lot of messing around to finally get the sites to be accessible to me.
I don’t know the shop you mentioned, as I was looking for a particular shop/person that I had seen at an artesania feria the week before.

The links work fine on my Chrome. Both Chrome and Firefox have some compatibility problems with MexConnect. IE works correctly all the time.
