One blazing Baja afternoon, I was sitting inside a palapa restaurant, directly in the airflow of a circulating air fan. The temperature was well over 100 degrees and the humidity was hovering around seventy-five percent. I was trying to work up enough courage to trudge a mile and a half to the beach, when suddenly a middle-aged couple breezed through the doorway. They were attired in crisp tennis whites, and seemingly stepped right out of an advertisement for a Rocky Mountain beer. "Nice day, isn't it?" the man tipped his hat in my direction. "Sure is" I grumbled.

You'll find AA throughout Mexico, even in small towns. NA has a sizable presence in the larger towns. Alanon is almost everywhere. OA, SALA and other programs are less likely to be encountered outside major cities. AA is very visible. I have noted where there are meetings in many cases, but like here, they move or change. We urge readers to help us keep this list current.

Yes, you can bring your cats; no they are not quarantined. You can even bring the cat in
the plane cabin, with a soft airline approved carrier (sherpa or samsonite). It costs
about $100 for the extra carry-on/pet ticket, and if the pet is in the cabin with you you
won't have to worry about pet travel restrictions due to weather. Get a health
certificate from your vet dated within 10 days of your departure, and a health
card/certificate showing all the vaccinations. Make sure the cat has a rabies shot. The
customs people will ask you for a USDA animal form, which so far no one in the US has ever
heard of or been able to find, but tell the customs people you called the consulate in
your state and they said this would be sufficient.

As some of you know, Glenna and I bought a building lot
just north of Zihuatanejo. We were thinking we wanted to build
a little house (600 - 900 sq ft) in a few years. But
with the peso appearing to stabilize, inflation projected at 20-30% for the
next year, and the recognition that if we don't build,
we'll still be paying to stay in a hotel, we're thinking
of building this winter.

The closest of Mexico's Pacific beach resorts to the U.S. West Coast, Mazatlan is a favorite winter destination for snowbirds who love its casual, sometimes gritty atmosphere, low prices, fresh seafood and miles of golden beaches. Many Canadians and West Coasters return year after year, settling in for a couple of weeks or half a year.

As I walked through the hotel lobby, the weight of the three hundred $100 bills sewn to the waist band of my Jockey shorts pulled my underpants down over my small rear. The money was hanging at my knees. As inconspicuous as a penguin waddling through the hotel lobby at high noon, I could easily have been mistaken for an amateur drug smuggler. When I approached the front desk, the clerk asked,
"Qué le parece un caja de seguridad?" I knew my cover was blown when he offered me a Safe-deposit Box.
It had been a long trip

Between 15 and 16 million U.S. citizens visit Mexico each year, while more than 460,000 Americans reside there year round. Although the majority of visitors thoroughly enjoy their stay, a small number experience difficulties and serious inconveniences. The Department of State and its Embassy and consulates in Mexico offer a wide range of services to assist U.S. citizens in distress. U.S. consular officials meet regularly with Mexican authorities to promote the safety of U.S. citizens in Mexico.
