Magueys were traditionally planted on the perimeters of fields in Central Mexico. In pre-Hispanic times, plots were worked by hand and thus were smaller than they are today. These plots near Calixtlahuaca, Mexico, are still small, though larger than they were in pre-Hispanic times due to the use of horses.
