The lake was not only valuable as a recreational resource, it was also a workplace. The village women, lacking washing machines in their homes, used the lake instead, pounding their clothes on stones at the lake’s edge. The old pier is in the background. Tamara and her sister Jill often used to help wash the family’s clothes "on the big washing rocks" before spreading them out on the rocks to dry. "It was an all-day affair, and lots of gossip went down while the wash was being done".
