The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Zacatecas dates back to the early 1700s. Intricate Baroque style carvings seen here on the exterior walls are made from immersing limestone into water for several weeks until it becomes so soft that it could be carved with a pencil. Then, as it dries in the hot sun, it becomes a hard stone again.
