Portrait of the Eternal (1935)
A woman with long, dark hair is holding a small mirror to her face. A light on the right side of her body pulls her out of the darkness and back into the temporal world. The mirror, frequently a symbol for vanity, highlights age and the passage of time. Beauty and light are dramatically revealed as transitory elements that are also paradoxically eternal in their recurrence.
