ARE THERE ANY POLICIES OR CONDITIONS OF USE?

Yes. There is a page devoted to this subject. Be certain to read it, because it governs our behaviour on these Forums. Policy and Conditions of Use.

ARE THE FORUMS MODERATED?

Yes. Each Forum is moderated by a person knowledgeable about the subject of that particular Forum.

WHAT DOES THE MODERATOR DO?

The Moderator looks after the Forum by:

  • Deleting commercial postings;
  • Deleting postings that: contain foul language; are personally insulting, are denigrating or down-right rude; are completely off the topic under discussion; contain false or misleading information; could be deemed libelous within Mexico;
  • Setting a time period after which unanswered questions are removed (usually around 30 days), and after which Threads which have had no activity will be remove (usually around 90 days)
  • Identifying and "Locking In" Threads deemed to be of ongoing value.
  • Contributing her or his knowledge and expertise when they believe it appropriate;
  • Managing the 'tone' or personality of the Forum;
  • Keeping the Forum to a reasonable size.

CAN I COMMUNICATE WITH THE MODERATORS?

Yes. There is an e-mail link available in each Forum that, when clicked, will open up an e-mail message for you to write to that Forum's Moderator.

ARE THE MODERATORS PAID?

No. Each Moderator is a volunteer. They are all dedicated people, who give of their time and energy to make their Forum(s) useful and worthwhile places to learn about Mexico.

WHICH FORUMS DO I POST TO?

Generally, you Post a message or question to the Forum that most closely matches the subject that you want to explore. The General Forum covers everything, so you can never go wrong posting there (except commercial postings of course). The other Forums provide a depth of focus that the General Forum does not. However, the General Forum is usually the most interesting as it includes so many things. You never know what is going to turn up! (The Moderators have the option to "Move" a Posting and Responses to another Forum when that is appropriate. A place marker will always be left showing where the Thread can be found.)

MUST I INCLUDE MY EMAIL ADDRESS?

No. At this point in time, you are not required to post your email address. However, remember that the Webmaster always has access to the every Poster's account which must include a valid and active email address. However, those that do, usually find that people will communicate with them directly rather than post a response. These direct communications are usually very pertinent to your query, and many good relationships have resulted. The choice is yours.

WILL I RECEIVE SPAM?

Hopefully not. As this is a system requiring registration so as to block commercial email harvesters, commercial automatic posting programs and to ensure the validity of active posters, you should be pretty protected. However, any time an email address is posted on the Internet — anywhere — someone will eventually "harvest' that email address, and you will receive spam.

There are things you can do. The most effective is to have three email addresses:

  1. Your personal address — which you NEVER post on the Internet, nor use for any emails except family and friends. (You will rarely, if ever, receive spam.)
  2. Your business address — which you use only with reputable companies on the Internet and for email with them. (You may receive some spam, but you can usually tell from which company and then you can tell them to remove you from their list.)
  3. Your Internet address — which you use openly, on unprotected sites (like Mexconnect's forums). (You WILL receive spam.) If someone replies to you with a serious email, you then have the option of continuing to correspond with that person using one of the first two addresses. Some people will create separate email accounts for use on particular forums or sets of forums (again, like Mexconnect). In this way, they can tell pretty quickly where the email address was found, and can decide what to do about it.
    Personally, I receive over 200 emails every day to my Internet address. I just select all, (with the shift key) de-select (with the control key) those that I actually want to look at (usually less than 5%). and delete the rest. Easy!
    I also have a philosophy that if I accidently delete an important one, the sender will send it again with a better Subject line that will induce me to look at it.

HOW DO I FIND SOMETHING?

The Forums have a very powerful search capacity that enables you to search within a Forum, a combination of Forums, or all the Forums. It is a good thing to do this before asking a particular question that may have been asked and answered previously.

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE DELETED POSTINGS?

Most often they are deleted permanently. For some Forums, they are archived as an extension of the existing Forum.

WHAT IS A "THREAD"

A Thread is a sequence of related messages/postings that are all responses to one original Posting or message.

CAN I ENTER A LINK TO MY OWN SITE?

Yes. As long as you are providing a useful and quality answer in your message to the original Posting, then it is fine to add your site to your message. Just posting "See my site." or "See the link below." is NOT acceptable, and will probably be deleted.

CAN I POST AN IMAGE??

Yes, with the following provisos:

  1. The file is not too large. People don't want to wait 5 minutes on the chance that your image is a Pulitzer Prize winner.
  2. The image is relevant to your posting, and/or Mexico.
  3. Images that are in poor taste and likely to offend the parents or teachers of school aged children will have the posting deleted.

CAN I BE TRACED?

Yes. In order to Post messages or Responses, you must Register. The registration process requires the inclusion of a valid email address which is checked. This address is available only to the WebJefe and Moderators. You may elect to provide an alternate, valid address for inclusion in the actual postings. All Postings can also be traced to the Poster's ISP, and, if necessary for legal or criminal reasons, the ISP can identify a specific account.

CAN PEOPLE GET KICKED OFF THESE FORUMS?

Yes. Where a Poster continually posts commercial messages, is always rude, or attempts to spam the Forums, they will be banned from posting..

ARE THESE FORUMS COMMERCIAL FREE?

With the exception of the Mexico Business Forum yes. No direct commercial postings are allowed. If some one posts a question about a service or a place or a product, and someone else replies with a recommendation from their personal experience, that is OK. However, if it appears that the responder is doing some shilling — then that posting will be removed! Otherwise, the only advertising are Mexconnect's own advertising such as Banners and Text Ads.
