Biography
English-born Tony Burton has an MA in geography from Cambridge University and a post-graduate teaching certificate from London University. He lived full-time in Mexico from 1979 to 1997 and returns there several times a year.
He is a freelance writer, educator and ecotourism consultant. He has led hundreds of fieldwork and ecotourism programs throughout Mexico, specializing in Lake Chapala, Paricutin Volcano, the Monarch Butterfly reserves and the Copper Canyon.
He has also given dozens of illustrated lectures or presentations on diverse Mexico- related topics, ranging from "The Monarch Butterflies: Sequins swirling in the Sky" and "Can Mexico's Largest Lake Survive?" to "Dr. Atl and the Revolution in Mexican Art" and "Why You Should Consider Retiring to Mexico - and What You'll Find When You Get There".
Bilingual (English-Spanish), he has translated several books in addition to writing more than 200 travel, natural history and ecotourist articles on Mexico. His acclaimed guide, Western Mexico: A Traveller's Treasury describes ecological, cultural and historical wonders in west Mexico, covering both famous sites and little-known gems.
He is currently working on selected early travel accounts of Western Mexico and assisting Dr. Rick Rhoda in writing (albeit slowly!) Mexico: Geographical perspectives, an introduction to the Geography of Mexico. Further into the future, he plans to publish a compilation based on his popular "Did You know?" columns which have appeared every month on Mexico Connect for the past several years.
