Highly recommended for travelers and residents alike, Mexico City's weekly entertainment magazine Tiempo Libre (or translated into English as "Free Time") has a polished and reader-friendly website (http://www.tiempolibre.com.mx/).
For those unfamiliar with this journal, Tiempo Libre simply covers it all: children's activities, theater, dance, movies, museums, bars, restaurants and gay culture (limited to weekend volleyball and city bars). Recently, the website has added a "chat function" for those who want to talk about Mexico City. The chat room is online http://foros.planet.com.mx/chattiempolibre. Subscriptions are available for those who'd like to receive the print version as well.
The only drawback for English-language readers is that the site - as well as the magazine - is exclusively in Spanish. But there may be no better way for learning the language than figuring out what you'd like to do in Mexico.
The restaurant and bar reviews are first rate. If you take any of their recommendations, you certainly won't find yourself bored or hungry. Nor will your pockets be empty - many of the highlighted places are simple neighborhood taverns and cafes that simply excel by offering good service.
One of my favorite sections is the off-beat and culturally sensitive tourism or turismo page (http://www.tiempolibre.com.mx/turismo/). It archives a seemingly endless list of new fairs and exhibits. This page keeps travelers up-to-date on events in places outside of Mexico City such as Puerto Vallarta, Zacatecas, Oaxaca and Taxco. And if you're hungry, check the archives for culinary destinations such as rural fairs dedicated to the nopal (prickly-pair cactus) or barbacoa. Delicious!
Tiempo Libre can be found on the web at http://www.tiempolibre.com.mx/. To contact the webmaster of the site, use the following email: wmaster@planet.com.mx.
