Cemeteries

Elaborate altars line covered corridors that wrap around Oaxaca City's main cemetery. Most families also have a private altar in their home, with food, flowers, candles and mementos. Often there is a competition among altar builders in the corridors of El Panteón. Some of the altars honor famous people. In 2002, there was a huge/creative tribute to the NYC tragedy of 9/11, a most moving display.
