The most common way to visit Copper Canyon is by train, which runs from Los Mochis to Chihuahua - one of the few remaining passenger trains in Mexico. While this rail trip offers spectacular views, passengers do not get an opportunity to go deep into the canyon. Therefore, a few years ago, I opted to experience the area first hand, traveling by truck and bus from Creel to Batopilas. After spending a few days at a guest house in LaBufa, I continued on to Batopilas, one of the most remote towns in Mexico. Here is a photo essay of my trip into the far reaches of Copper Canyon.

RESOURCES

To get to Batopilas, plan to spend a night or two in Creel, a frontier-like town bustling with backpackers and guide companies. The bus that shuttles between Creel and Batopilas goes one way one day and returns the next, necessitating an overnight stay at the canyon bottom.

Shangri-La, an informal guest house in LaBufa.
