Mexico's Hacienda Architecture

Hacienda La Gavia - The original name of the hacienda was Nuestra Senora de la Candelaria. Situated in an arid, rather cold region in the state of Mexico, its lands were originally granted by Hernán Cortés to his cousin, the Count of Santiago de Calimaya. In the eighteenth century ownership moved to the Jesuits who held it until they were expelled from Mexico in 1767. It was then bought at auction by the Count of Regla, the richest miner in Mexico.

The exterior courtyard façade of La Gavia was embellished in the twentieth century, but it retains its eighteenth-century architectural character. Beyond the arches is the internal courtyard of the house.
