I am about to buy a house in Mexico and I will be renting the house to friends on occasion.
For protection in case of a tragedy, I would like to purchase homeowners insurance.
Does anyone know where to find info on homeowners insurance in Mexico?

What's the peril you want covered? Property loss/damage or liability? The only Mexican insurance I've carried is auto; no one I know carries home owner's. I lied...I think there may be an American or two who bought earthquake insurance (and who could barely afford it for a very
modest dwelling). It is available and fairly pricey. That's the reason most people self-insure.Mexicans are not as litigious as Americans. The justice system is not only slower but less compensatory than ours; despite its indictments from the U.S. judicial system, its vagaries may be better in the longrun. (Oh heck, it's been a long day in my American role as a divorce lawyer.)
All of Baja is practically another world apart from the rest of Mexico.I'm not sure in what part of BCS your house is located, but the Cabo San Lucas area seems like West Los Angeles, South. If you're renting your property to Americans, dependent upon your lease, etc., hey may try to find a hook to sue you in the US. You need to consult a Mexican lawyer; ask the lawyer who's handling your end of the purchase. As for insurance, there are a number of agencies in Mexico. If you're
in San Diego, you might give the Oscar Padilla Agency (I think they're in Mission Valley) a call for premium estimates.Posted by Ernie Gorrie on November 18, 1996

I'm glad that somebody asked this question. I'm sure that we won't be able to get fire insurance on our house that we are planning to build. The nearest volunteer fire department is about 40 km away, and the nearest fire hydrant is probably 30 km away... But I am interested in knowing what kind of homeowners' insurance is available and whether I should be buying some.

We have a policy with Lewis Lewis Of L.A., Calif. They are an American Co. but represent a Major Mwexican Insurance Co. The rates are reasonable, but I cant tell you about claims as we havent had any. We even have coverage on our Satellite dish and outbuildings. Phone 1800 966 6830 or 1 310 657 1112. I can tell you that they are a legitimate co. I have visited the office and it seems to be a large concern. They also offer auto ins. I know that there are other companies as well.
