WHERE WOULD YOU GO IN MEXICO?

My husband, seventeen year-old son and I want to use up some frequent flyer miles on American Airlines. We've been to Guadalajara and all the border cities. We live on the beach here in the US, so aren't particularly interested in beach cities in Mexico, per se. We fumble along in Spanish, never missing a meal or a bed, but we aren't what you'd call fluent. However, we ARE fearless. If the Mexicans can tolerate our baby talk, we'll do fine. If you could go somewhere "neat" in Mexico, where would you go? Where would you go to sit in a cafe and watch the world go by? Where would you go to see some great architecture? Where are interesting markets and zocalos?
Where would YOU go?

Zacatecas. San Luis Potosí. Morelia. Oaxaca. Or all of the above.

Have you thought about Queretaro (The City). Also the surrounding area or Guanajuato. Very few Americans in either place. Lots of architecture and culture as well as history. Tequisquiapan, Bernal. All lovely places. Sidewalk cafes, pedestrian walkways. Tequisquiapan is well known for its balanearios. You would have to take a plane to either Guad. or DF, my preference is Guad. and take a bus to QRO. or rent a car. The car rental thing can be expensive in Mexico but there is a Cuota (tollway) most of the way to QRO. It's a 4 hr. drive. Then just explore the area. I would not recommend renting a car in DF. The traffic is a TRIP. I'd be more than happy to tell you more if you are interested.

I'd go to Mexico City, and start at ground zero, the Centro Historico, coffee at the Majestic's rooftop, meander over to while away the rest of the day in Tacuba, and then cab over to Coyoacan the next day. Nights would be spent at the Camino Real, where there's plenty of life to observe. The next day would start out in Polanco and finish up somewhere in Lomas Chapultepec. Then I'd go to Cuernavaca, staying at Las Mananitas, and when that gets old, I'd go on over to Yautepec.

Then I'd drive over to Valle de Bravo for the ultimate rest. And when that becomes burdensome, I'd take the old road over to Zitacuaro, through Cd. Hidaldo and Mil Cumbres to reach Morelia. Stopping home long enough to grab clean clothes, I'd finish off the trip with a trip to Zirahuen, stopping over in Patzcuaro just long enough to curse the tourists.

Oh, interesting markets. I'd opt for Santa Fe in D.F. (But then, shopping whenever I want to at a local tianguis in my own 'hood, I think Ace Hardware has the most exciting shopping in my town.)
