Does anyone know where I can find a pet friendly accommodation listing for Mexico?
Thanks. Leo

Hello,
We had a terrible time getting info on pet friendly accommodations when we were moving from LA to the Lake Chapala area. But as things turned out, it wasn't too bad. The best source I know is Sanborn's Travelog Series, through Sanborn's Insurance. I believe Sanborn's has a website, too. Some of the travelogs may be in your local bookstore. Be forewarned, the listings are not 100% accurate. It is a good idea to start looking for a place before late afternoon if you want peace of mind; otherwise wait until later when places want your business. The latter is not recommended. The fancier, multi-story hotels/motels are less likely to say "yes" and beach areas are more likely to be accepting. I got the feeling that except for the fancy places with doormen and bellhops, they didn't care too much. It is also a good idea to describe your animals as "small" even if they aren't. Bottom line is that you will always find a place, but allow yourself time to check out a few and get turndowns, and don't be terribly picky about having luxury accommodations--chances are you won't!

Casa Luna in Talaquepaque (Guadalajara) accepts well-trained pets. Good Location, friendly.

Does anyone have suggestions where a person can spend a night on the road to Mexico from the Midwest with a dog. If there are chains that accept them etc. Also if there is a place recommended between the AZ border to Mazatlan. Many thanks in advance.

In the US, Beto the Doberman has stayed at La Quinta, Red Roof Inns, Comfort Inns, and countless Best Westerns with nary a problem. In Laredo, in addition to La Quinta and the Red Roof Inn, Family Gardens also accepts animal companions. En route from Laredo to Morelia, my Doberman gang has stayed at the Camino Real in Saltillo, Las Fuentes in Saltillo, the Oasis and the El Dorado (both dumps) in Matehuala, the Cactus in SLP, and at a couple of moteles de paso of no particular remembrance. In Maria de la Paz (or something like that), about 25 km. south of SLP, Beto was even invited to join me in the hotel dining room. Of course, he has impeccable manners.

Totem the weimariner has traveled for 3 months a year in Mexico for the last 13 years. Never has she been turned down at any hotel. When the desk employee shows hesitation, we ask for the manager, and/or offer a special deposit for her. It has never been accepted, and has resulted in special rooms that open onto fenced orchards, private terraces and deluxe rooms, all at no additional charge. Just be sure to be a good dog owner, and have a great time! Talley
