I would like to know where you think the best selection and prices are for shopping for Huichol art is. I was thinking of flying in to Guadalajara and taking a bus to villages. Thank you.

I'm certainly no expert when it comes to Huichol art works, but I do know that the city of Tepic, Nayarit, is a good starting place for your search. Most Huichol and Cora villages are remote, so you'll have to fly in to them. The trick is to find those villages selling the art that you want to buy. This, I'm certain you can do in Tepic.

Another resource on Huichol art is the small Museo Huichol which is connected to the right of the Basilica de Zapopan (a suburb of Guadalajara). You can purchase and obtain information there. Occasionally there are Huicholes selling some of their art on the surrounding sidewalks. Tepic has several very good stores specializing in Huichol art--one of which is run by two sisters and is near the zocalo. There is also a Museo de Artes Populares at Hidalgo 60 Ote., which has displays of Huichol, Cora and other ethnic groups of the region. I hope this information is useful to you. Otto

Hi:
I have just put up some new pages on the Huichol culture and art. You can find photos of the fiesta here in Tepic for the installation of the new governors in the Col. Zitucua. This section will continue to grow with translations, photos and more.
