Does anybody have a preference for a market? I'm after the plastic oil cloth and the brightly colored plastic mesh market bags which can fit into the suitcase on the way home. Cheers from down under.

The Mercado Merced in DF is one of the largest and best I've ever visited. There is even a metro stop right at the market. Once you walk through the veggies, there is a "paper" market that carries all manner of paper and plastic items. They should have just what you want. E-mail me directly if you need more specific info. Janis

Dear Peggy:
Regarding your question, does anybody have a preference for a market; I have yet to meet a mercado that I didn't like. However to further your search, here's an excellent site that a friend of mine prepared with a wealth of information about Mexican mercados with photos, descriptions of the types of vendors, their products, a virtual tour where he describes the sights, sounds and smells of a typical "Day in the Life of a Mercado." Of special interest to you might be his list of 75 notable Mexican mercados. Enjoy! Sincerely, Wendy

The primary market for this material is on the streets adjacent to Mercado Sonora, between this market and the other market known as La Merced. There are several streets lined with shops selling plastic cloths. You can take a taxi, or the micro buses along Avenida Chapultepec from the Zona Rosa area (the street changes names and becomes Fray Servando) - on which the Market can be found. The market will be on your right side and the shops selling the cloths are located along Fray Servando just before arriving at the market and along some of the side streets running off of Fray Servando.
