I am visiting in July. I have read in some sources that the bay is polluted. I have spoken to others who said that it is fine, and delightful to swim in. What can I expect?

Acapulco is on a Pacific Coast bay, while Cancun is part of the Caribbean, and the water is different, as is the "sand" on the beaches. Therefore, some people think that the water in ACA is "dirtier." It is true that for some years Acapulco Bay was being polluted by a combination of raw sewage dumping into the water and by the many cruise ships calling at the port. However, over the past ten years things have gotten much better. My last trip to ACA was at the end of January 2000, the water was clean and many people, including myself, were swimming without problems. A good site to post these ACA related questions to is located at www.acapulco.org (scroll down the main page until you reach the heading "Acapulco Chat Room" and click away). The posters to this site are either residents of ACA or very frequent visitors and can provide you with any up-to-the-minute reports. Enjoy the trip!
