Pictures of Cacaxtla, Mexico
Not a lot is known about Cacaxtla (pronounced ca-CASH-tla). It is believed that a group of Olmec or Maya probably settled here around 400 AD. The site flourished between 650 and 900 and the was abandoned around 1000 possibly due to Chichimec encroachment. Discovered in 1975, the site contained well preserved colorful murals. Unearthing them required the construction of the huge canopy for their protection. (Pictures taken May 2, 2004)
