your broadband connection speed

Rumor has it that Prodigy's infinitum speeds have been irratic lately; in fact I received an email from a neighbor who had some very irractive and sometimes very slow upload and download speeds when connecting to Prodigy Infinitum.

Unlike the bad results my neighbor had, my connection has been quite stable when testing at http://www.dslreports.com/stest?loc=2 I have the slowest infinitum connection. It is advertised with download speeds up to 512 and upload speeds of 128 kb/sec here in Ajijic. My download speeds are usually around 410 to 420 kb/sec or about 81% of advertised and my upload speeds are usually about 45 to 68 kb/sec or about 44% of advertised.

My question for you Prodigy Infinitum users is, 1. what are your advertised upload and download speeds and what are you actually getting when you test at http://www.dslreports.com/stest?loc=2

My advertised 512 by 128 gives me an averqge of 415 by 57kb/sec when testing at the above site.

1009Kbps down/284Kbps up.

According to the chart I'm supposed to be receiving between 512 and 1280Kbps down and 256 and 384Kbps up.

So I guess I'm doing OK though I have to tell you I'm not thrilled about that 512 number... that wasn't there when I first signed up. :/

Now, the bigger question concerns latency. The quality of the connection as perceived by the user is almost always due to latency and not to overall bandwidth (for the newbies, latency can be described as how quick you get a response back, as opposed to how much response you get.)

And I have to say, that over the past week or so, my latency has sucked. Websites seem to take forever to load, and I had a bad ssh experience too (but I don't use that too much so... whatever.)

That said...

Whenever I have these problems, I just remember how grateful I was when I learned that I would be able to get DSL while in Mexico. It isn't a given even NOB.

I pay about one-third more than I used to for DSL, for about one-third less speed.

But the way I figure it, I make it all up in avocados.

Just had my worst day ever on Infinitum. 200Kbps down, something like 32Kbps up. This was during the afternoon.

Speeds have picked up a little, but it's still nowhere close to what I should be scoring.

FWIW.

Pete, It seems like ever since last weekend I have been running slow. I just checked my speed and it is:

2005-07-16 09:55:52 EST: 2 / 136
Your download speed : 2372 bps, or 2 kbps.
A 0.2 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed is much faster than down.. have you tweaked?
Your upload speed : 140252 bps, or 136 kbps.

Have you had any trouble?

Yes Jerry, something is wrong with my infinitum connection too. But wrong in the right way. I have the slowest connection available. It used to be a 256 over 128. Then they increased the download speed last spring to 512 over 128.

My actual speeds were about 220 by 60 and then went up last spring to about 440 by 60.

Well something is very wrong, but in the right direction. My download speeds and upload speeds have doubled since I checked several days ago. I am getting between 856 and 1110 for a download speed and 107 to 112 upload. So yes, something is wrong, smile, my speeds are even faster than they should be.

So at the old 256 over 128 I was getting about 82% over 50% of advertised speed. When the increased the speed last fall, I kept on getting about 82% over 50% of the new advertised speed, but now for some strange reason, I'm getting about 190% of the advertised download speed and maybe 90% of the advertised upload speed.

I'm experiencing some truly awful download speeds with Prodigy Infinitum. Started yesterday afternoon, and was bad overnight too.

What's interesting is that my upload speeds don't appear to be affected. 285kbps up vs. only 15kbps down!

Anybody else?

Rain is always tough on phone infrastructure. That's my guess. We had a pretty strong storm last night and lately we've had our share of rain.

Infinitum was slow in Guanajuato last night also. I was testing at just above dial-up speed. I tried calling Telmex Technical Support, and waited on hold for close to one half hour before I hung up. It is usually a 5 minute wait, maximum. Perhaps it was a nationwide slowdown and they were inundated with calls.

Who knows what's been eating the Internet around here--my speed (theoretically 1mg on cable from Guadalajara) has been s l o w for two days, until this afternoon, when it picked back up to normal, which is about 935kbps.

Let's see what happens tomorrow.
