need help with cell phone

Does anyone else have a Verizon Wireless cell phone from the US here? For some reason I can´t get mine to work although it was working fine in Mexico City. According to the paper I have, to dial to the ÜS one should dial 001 then the area code and 7 digit number and to dial long distance within Mexico one should dial 01 city code and 8 digit number. Both of these options give me a message that my call can not be completed as dialed in spanish. I get the feeling I need to do something else to get onto the local network first? If any knows I would really appreciate the info.

Thanks!
Patricia

When I set up my StarTAK phone in the summer for the North American plan, I was told the phone needed to be on side B - who even knew phones had sides - which I dutifully did - only to find out that for the areas in which I was travelling side A took are of it all. We travelled down the western side of Mexico to the Guadalajara area with a side trip to Guanajuato and Dolores Hidalgo. Could this be your problem and you are on the wrong side of the phone for where you are? Did they have you change anything when you set it up? There is a number in Mexico for Verizon help and on looking back in my records I find this 01-800-333-0611. Try it and see if it works for you

I had Verizon cell phone service in the U.S. with a Samsung instrument. Before leaving California, Verizon said my phone service might not work as far as San Miguel and suggested contacting Usacell, which I did at the Gigante branch office. I was sent from there to the office on Francisco, where the technician reprogrammed my instrument for $20. I have been buying the $100 peso cards as needed and the phone is working fine.

Oops, that's 001. I had trouble recently and Verizon said I needed to reprogram. I think it's *77. I seem to have trouble when I first change locations.

Thanks to everyone for the help! I first spoke with the local company who did not see me in their network. They had me switch to side A which enabled local calling but not international, then transferred me to Verizon who enabled Mexico roaming on my phone which fixed the international calling problem.

However back in Mexico City my phone stopped working, I switched back to side B, no luck, after a long conversation with the local company again they transferred me to Verizon who disabled Mexico roaming and enabled International dialing which fixed everything.

I have to say the local phone company has very nice helpful phone support in english - but that is ridiculous if I have to go through account changes with Verizon each time I switch cities!
