Yahoo Phone out

Can't Post | Private Reply
Is anyone using Yahoo's new service for computer to any phone? They have phone out and phone in where you get a telephone number and anyone can call you on this number from any phone. You can call any phone anywhere. The rates seem reasonable too. I have been using it for a couple of weeks and the service is pretty good IMHO.

Since there were no comments on this when I first posted it I am wondering why. The rates are not based on where you are but where you are calling. It does not matter where you are and they only ask for a country so you do not have to put in the country code on calls to the country you call the most.

Here is a sample of the rates and I think they are pretty good. Does anyone know of something cheaper?

Sample Rates U.S. /min Canada /min London /min Madrid 1.5¢/min Beijing 1.5¢/min Tokyo 1.9¢/min Mexico City 1.9¢/min Bangalore 9.9¢/min
With the ability to call any phone in the world from your computer, at great rates, I have no idea why anyone is not looking at this (Pete especially). I have been using it since it came out and it works just fine. I call on my computer to anywhere and the costs have been very low.

They also offer a phone in service but I have not looked at that as there is a monthly cost and I don't like phone calls anyway. I loved cell phones as I only turn them on when I want to make a call. People cannot call me if it is off.

I also am now using it. I previously used Dialpad for broadband outbound calls, however Yahoo recently purchased the company. They gave me a certain amount of time and then my existing credit vanished, so I downloaded Yahoo Talk to give it a try. You are correct, Shoe, in that the sound quality and the cost are really good. I call Canada most often and for 1 cent per minute it is like being free. I use another system for inbound calls and don't pay anything except the actual per minute cost. (It's higher than 1 cent per minute though)

The combination works for our needs and we don't pay a monthly fee of any sort. The difficulty I have encountered, and maybe there is a work-around that I haven't figured out, is that when calling any number answering with an auto attendant requiring me to push 1 for English (Canada) or enter a pin code for something, the Yahoo number dialer has vanished from the computer screen already. With Dialpad the phone program stayed on the screen and operated just like a telephone keypad. I hope that can be rectified because I am very pleased with it otherwise.

Darn it Shoe, you are right. I should look into it, but when? Every free second I have right now is going through boxes and boxes of things kept by my grandparents, parents, kids etc etc etc as I clean out the pack rat capital of the world. I have received a contingency offer on my summer cottage in the woods of NW WA, am downsizing and preparing to move to a much smaller condo in Seattle where they actually have broadband.

No I am not giving up my Mexican home. I am simply downsizing my US presence.

If you are calling computer to computer, voice AND VIDEO, you can't do better than SKYPE... software is free, phone/video free to other computer with same software....

Phone out and in are also available, but at rates between 2 to 10 cents approximately, all around the world.

Marlene, I am using the Beta versions of Yahoo. Now when I make a call there is a little window that comes up and does the dialing. It stays there as long as the call is going on, giving you the minutes connected, and you disconnect from there. In that window is a keypad to click on. Then you use this keypad to enter PINs, extensions or other info as needed. I just used it and it works just fine.

Ignacio, Skype costs twice what Yahoo phone out costs for US calls. Your comment about computer to computer communications (voice and video) is correct but why would you want to download another piece of software when Yahoo IM has the same thing at the same costs; free. That is of course if you have Yahoo already and I think most people do.

Hey Shoe. Please forgive me for asking this. I am sure I could look it up. But I am still in panic mode, trying to get ready for my downsizing move some 90 days from now. Oh I just sold my Bayliner today for 30% of what I bought it for some 10 years ago. Oh you guys it's a real big one. 18.5 meters, I lied, it is 18.5 feet and I got $4k for it from a neighbor and friend who will let me use it any time I want in the future on our very small lake.

Oh, back to my question. As I recollected with Skype one could call most places NoB for about 2.2 cents per minute. And one could call DF, Guad, etc for only a little more, but if I wanted to call anywhere else in Mexico, it was like about 10 cents per minute. What does it cost to phone a number in the rest of Mexico, with Yahoo, 10 cents as well?

The indicate cost on their site is: 5.9¢ a minute elsewhere in Mexico.

Calls to NoB are: 1¢ per minute.

Thanks for your postings shoe. Because it is fairly new, I have been reluctant to try Yahoo's phone out. Now I will give it a try, though I am happy with the skype I have been using for the last 2 weeks. Prices for YAhoo phone out are better.
