Working Remotely

I am trying to see if I can convince my company to allow me to work remotely from Mexico. I am a systems administrator and do 99% of my work remotely now so it's not a major leap and my company already has an office in Mexico City (not interested in living there).

My question is, how reliable are the connections in Mexico. I am looking at Mazatlan, or possibly San Miguel and my final retirement destination. Does anyone out there work remotely now?

I do not work remotely, but I am disconnected from my dial-up connection about 3 times daily on average, but it can vary from 0 to 10 times per day. My service is with Avantel. I have spent hours on the phone with their technicians in the past year and a half and they steadfastly refuse to admit that it is their problem. It's always "my computer" or "my phone line" and never anything to do with them. They have "reconfigured" my computer perhaps 25 times. This same computer functioned for 2 years in the US on a dial-up connection without one disconnection.

I use Prodigy dial up connection, and have no disconnect problems. We may switch to Prodigy highspeed Infinitum someday but for now it is fine. I do the bulk of my work over the internet and find it fine. Here in Mazatlán there are plenty of people working over the internet. The best of all worlds.

Some folks who have to have uninterrupted internet connectivity use two ISP's. I have a friend here on the shores of Lake Chapala, who uses lagunanet's 802.11b wireless broadband and Prodigy's ADSL connection as a backup.

I have only one of the two services, Lagunanet, and have had no interruptions since last fall. At that time per prior arrangement I used old fashioned dialup until I could repair my Ethernet bridge.

That said I know some folks at one 802.11b hot spot (there are about a dozen down here {fixed WiFi}) who have experienced 24 to 36 hours down-times this month. Again, they could have arranged a dialup backup.

I doubt there is any ISP in the world that will have 100 percent uninterupted service. I use a Megacable 512k connection without many problems although it's not perfect. Like our tech moderator said, if you need more reliability, you could have ADSL and a high speed cable connection to decrease your down time. Both are available in Mazatlan.
