Why the devil is satellite internet so expensive in Mexico??

Can't Post | Private Reply
From what I have read, satellite internet has a hefty price tag in Mexico. Here in the states, they are expensive, but don't cost an arm and a leg! Why is that??

Thanks

You would pay more down here ONLY if you were to use a broker or agent down here to pay your bill. But if you pay it yourself, using an address in the US or Canada, you would be paying exactly the same as you do up North.

As I recollect, you are from Texas, where you might already be subscribing to DirecTV or to Dish. In Northern Mexico, both work well. By the time you reach Guadalajara, only Dish comes in well.

For those of you from Canada, Only Star Choice comes in well in this part of Mexico. For further information, search some of the older topics in this forum

I was actually referring to internet. Don't care much for satellite t.v. I read one post where the guy wanted about six grand to set the system up. I would hope that included the satelitte dish, but I wouldn't bet on it. looked at Skyblue(or some name like that) website and I think theirs was about four grand. There appears to be a company in Houston that has connectons with companys in Mexico and South America that will set up internet applications. It may be that I am reading what is need for comercial purposes. I don't know. Thanks for your answer.

Boy do I feel the fool. Too often I skim a post then answer forgetting one word. In this case INTERNET via satellite

Yes some of the packages seem way too expensive. But there is another alternative. If you are the typical internet user, you are downloading much more than you are up-loading, and if you could increase the speed of your download by a factor of more than 10 you would be a lot better off. What you do is use your telephone connection for the upload and and one-way satellite at an advertised speed of 400 kb/sec for the download.

The hardware costs? As low as $125 if you do the install yourself. Take a look at one of the two URLs below and if interested do a google search for more.

http://www.skysurfer.net/products.htm or

http://sales.iwc.net/satellite.htm

PS the two satellites used for this service, AMC 6 and Satmex 5 both have great coverage all over Mexico

Thanks, I will look at those sites. You are right, that might be a good alternative. Why I ask is that I emailed Lagunanet and asked about the cell coverage at lakeside. He replied that it all depended on where one lives. There is apparantly no service in Chapala and on the fringes of other areas. My wife and I will be renting for at least a year to make sure we like the area well enough to buy and I am not sure where we will be able to rent. I am hoping my home here in Corpus sells in a reasonable time and I don't want to be caught with my pants down. High speed internet is, for several reasons, important to me. If cell isn't available, I want to be prepared for the alternatives.

Don't forget that Chapala now has ADSL, or so I read on TelMex's web page. They advertise that their coverage is within 3 KM wire length of the switching station, or what ever it's called

Thanks, that's great news. I had ADSL in Dallas before I moved to Corpus a couple years ago. It really worked well. I currently have cable, which is doing the job.

Sort of late in posting an additional question on this subject but...if I were to bring my Direct TV dish down with me will it work in the Ajijic area? I would imagine that if there is no problem with the reception on Direct TV I would be better off by continuing to pay the service bill as if the service was still in effect at the initial point of installation.

You asked "if I were to bring my Direct TV dish down with me will it work in the Ajijic area?" This gets asked about once every few months.

Look at the top of this page where it says search posts, left click thereon and enter "DirecTV" . You will find many posts explaining why Dish or Star Choice would be a better solution. :)
