Vonage for business

Can't Post | Private Reply
I am not a techie, but I needed to get input from Vonage users in Mexico.

I am exploring the option of working from home for a US based company while living in Mexico. I need to get a realistic assesment of the reliability of the service not just for personal, but business use. I would need to be available telephonically for conference calls, customer calls etc.

I realize electricity interruption could be a problem with this service, but I'd love to hear the thoughts of users who are currently using this product.

Thanks!

Vonage is just one of several VoIP products available and used here in Mexico. A few others are IconnectHere, Packet8, ATT, Broadvox, Lingo, Verizon VoiceWing, VoicePulse, etc

I am usually quite satisfied with my VoIP connection to the states. But what determines it is the quality and speed of my broadband connection, to include the backbone to the US.

In my town, Ajijic, we have two broadband services ADSL and fixed wireless. Often at the slowest speeds offered by both, the upload speeds are two slow. Usually at the higher speeds, there is no problem.

Friends who depend on a high degree of reliability subscribe to both of the broadband ISPs.

A friend I just called suggested that the down time on each of the services was quite small, but that he had never knowingly experienced an occasion when both services were down.

I know persons who have had bad luck with VoIP. Usually, they are located at the far extreme of the coverage areas of the ISPs. The closer one is to the connection source, the fewer complaints there usually are.

I just phoned another friend with ADSL, who has the slowest connection (256/128) who says he never has a problem with his Vonage as long as his wife isn't competing for bandwidth by uploading or downloading on another computer.

Thanks so much for the prompt reply. We are considering living in Cuernavaca, Guadalajara or Queretaro. Since we won't be in a remote area, I would think that high speed access wouldn't be a problem. Before we would rent or buy any house, high speed internet connectivity would be a decisive factor in our selection. Wireless web access is definately out if VoIP quality becomes a big issue. I'll be checking out the other services as well.

FWIW, I live in Guadalajara and have cable Internet running at 1045kpbs. It's reliable, relatively inexpensive, and faster than a speeding bullet.

Esperanza,

How would you rate the sound quality compared to a good land-line phone connection?

In Mazatlan, we have Vonage and broadband cable (1024 K) connection. Vonage, most of the time doesn't work well. From tests done by others using the same ISP, DSL from Telmex has proven to be the best way to go. The cable company is well aware of the problem and is working on a fix but as to when, quien sabe.

Estaban:

I presume that you mean that your download speed is 1024. What is your upload speed?

Often a broadband connection is really only broadband with the download which lets you hear the person really well, but because the upload is so much slower, often the person listening to me speak hears a lot of breakup.

I know I have occasionally experienced that problem with the two broadband providers in the greater Ajijic-Chapala area.
