Many of you have VoIP phones in Mexico, either with Vonage or Packet8 or the like, where you have a US phone number assigned. You then can use it to call someone in the states for a 'good rate of flat monthly fee', and they can call you in Mexico at that phone number for the cost of a US long distance call (or no charge if that phone number was set up in their home area code). I understand how that works. What I don't know is if you purchased that phone/plan while you were in the US and brought it down to use on your broadband account in Mexico, or whether you bought it while in Mexico. My real question I guess is "does Vonage know" that you are in Mexico or do they care? Is this sort of like the satellite TV installations there where Dish or DirectTV or Star Choice 'think' you are in their coverage area and the service must be set up as if that is the case? I have VoIP here in the states and I am wondering if I can just bring my adapter down, plug it into my broadband service there and 'carry on as if I were in my hometown'? My phone adapter is actually built into my Linksys router so that would actually be what I would bring down.
