Travel to the US with a Telcel Phone

Can't Post | Private Reply
I plan on going to the US next month for around two weeks. Does anyone know or experienced on how to contract through Telcel to get voice and data. The Telcel site is a bit confusing so I thought there might be someone whose done this before.

I'm not talking about unlocking the phone nor buying a throw-away while in the US.

I have an iPhone 4, that I take up north quite often. I have a Telcel Amigo pay as you go plan. Telcel automatically hooks me up with AT&T and I can dial a US number very easily, just by dialing the area code and telephone number. I was told that the per minute roaming fee is quite high. It's something like 20 pesos per minute. (It is not exactly that. I just know its very high.)

I never get data. I turn that option off and use any free WiFi available, to include the WiFi in my Condo.

I am not a very good source of information as my friends know not to call me when I'm up north, and when I need to call anywhere, I can use my condo landline.

So, I guess what I'm saying is, if you don't use it much you are not going to be charged much, and because I hardly ever use it when up north, I'm a bad source as to the costs. Sorry about that.

Thanks for the info. I was thinking of using data and wifi. Less voice and SMS and more Skype, Whatsapp, Facebook, etc. In reading the Telcel site and its lack of tariffs and convoluted plans to pre-buy voice and data, it's nice to know that it's simple.

Sitting here in Des Moines, Iowa, I have to agree with johanson that turning off data is the best idea. Even without using any app that would use data, just turning it on constantly uses data. After researching the Telcel web site with this knowledge, they have a minimum plan that would lower the cost of data to an acceptable level. When I return, I'm going to drop the Amigo plan to one called, I believe, Mixto.
