Spanish Punctuaton Marks Not On My Keyboard

Can't Post | Private Reply
My question is probably kind of stupid, but how do I get the proper Spanish Punctuation marks in a word ending such as "immediacion" (ending with "cion")? Obiviously the letter "O" should have a accent mark. Do I have to use two different keyboards - one for English and one for Spanish? I vaguely recall in my younger years using the Alt Function on the keyboard with a three digit number to get a special character. Is this a practical solution ?

You can use the ALTnnn scheme, or you can download a little free program that allows you to type all the marks without having to remember or lookup the ATL codes. I use it a lot.

If you want to go the ALT route, here is a list:

alt 160 = á
alt 130 = é
alt 161 = í
alt 162 = ó
alt 163 = ú
alt 129 = ü
alt 164 = ñ
alt 165 = Ñ
alt 168 = ¿
alt 173 = ¡
alt 167 = º Degree mark

In Spanish capitals do not get marks except Ñ

And remember, the numbers must be entered from the keypad not from the line of numbers above the letter keys.

Rolly,

Do these combinations limit you to Times New Roman, or some other font? Few people know about Character Map which is found on all Windows operation systems, I believe (unless it was not installed when Windows was installed). Look in Programs (or All Programs), Accessories, System Tools. All characters for all the fonts on your computer are then available to be copied and pasted, or used with Alt keys. Over the years I've used this program a lot.

What I have done is to change the settings on my computer. Go to Control Panel, then Keyboard, and change the settings to: "US International Keyboard". I can't remember, but I think I then did a Google search of US International Keyboard and found a good explanation of the functions. Using this setting you can avoid the Alt Codes for Spanish puncuation, accents, letters, etc. The Alt Codes do come in handy however, for things not covered on the US International Keyboard: Alt174=«, Alt175=», Alt167=º, Alt126=~, Alt246=÷, Alt171=½, Alt172=¼, Alt156=£.

Rolly - the spanish character technique is a terrific tip - thank you! But, alas, it works in Microsoft Word, but doesnt work when sending an email. I may need to check what format I am using for composing email.

Have you had experience with these alt keystrokes for these characters in email and other applications?

It works for me in both Mexconnect and HotMail services. What are you using?
