Skype works now

A recent upgrade by Skype now makes it possible to call non-Skype phone numbers. 2 cents a minute to call the US from Mexico. 800 numbers are free calls. Buy ten euros worth of time and try it. I don't know if Telmex has stopped interferrring or if the upgrade made the difference.

I just started using Skype and (with the new upgrade) it works fine. I have used it to call Ajijic from San Juan Cosala and find the price to be $ 0.099 cents a minute. I believe Telmex rate is about 2.5 pesos a minute for this call. Also, the monetary unit can be changed. I changed it to U.S. dollars and purchased $10 dollars U.S.. I also used it to call the U.S. and it was clear as a bell. And, as Olalla said, it is only $0.021 cents a minute for the U.S. call.

Sure you can pay Telmex more than 25 cents US with tax per minute to phone Ajijic from San Juan Cosala, but you do not have to. I pay 50 centavos or about 5 cents per minute to phone long distance anywhere in Mexico by using Telmex's Lada Nacional plan.

How much does it cost using skype to phone anywhere in Mexico? I thought it was closer to 3.5 cents per minute, but I am not sure

Without checking out the rates, it does cost more to call to Mexico or within Mexico than Mexico to US. And it's ideal for those long calls to 800 numbers where you are on hold most of the time.

You are absolutely right Pete. I currently use the Lada Nacional plan that costs 100 pesos for 200 minutes. That does come out to .05 a minute, about half price of what Skype costs. My only concern with that plan: was what would happen if I went over the 200 minutes. Would it automatically sell me another 200 minutes or would I be back on the 2.5 pesos per minute rate. Any ideas on that? I would hate to try to keep a running total of minutes used to know when to start using Skype! :-)

Right on Rocky:

You asked the correct question. The problem is the answer is not what we want to hear. After the 200 minutes at 100 pesos*, the rates go up to normal, you know 2.58 +15% or about 28 cents US during peak periods and 1.29 +15% IVA or about 14 cents US per minute during the off peak hours.

*50 centavos +IVA divided by 10.6 peos per US $=5.4+ cents US per minute

I finally got around to installing SKYPE and using it for free Audio and Video calls from here in Veracruz to the USA.

I also used the option of calling another 'non-skype' regular phone number in the USA for appx. 2 cents a minute.

The voice and video quality are GREAT !
