Just announced they will only accept payments by a credit card with a Canadian address. Anybody got any ideas?

That is the way it should be if you want Canadian TV, you need to have an address for there, the same is with Dish Network or DirecTV, even SKY and Dish Latino. Nothing new here. Best beware that Shaw will eventually do the big audit like they did with Dish Network, even though they say it is OK to have a unit here, but when the audit happens it sure will be hard to get all those receivers in one household.

What some folks are saying is that not only must you have an address in Canada, but you must also pay from a bank account that is also located in Canada.

There are some folks who have cottages just north of the Canada US boarder but live in the states when not at the cottage, and therefore pay from bank accounts located in the states Apparently some of them (not all) are getting notification that they can not continue to pay from a bank located in the US.

I sure hope that this is a false rumor. And no I don't have a solution.

This from TOB: My guys (in CA) say - the CRTC (Canada's communication arm of the government) has ruled that Shaw can not broadcast south of the Canadian border. This came down on June 3, 2013. So there are lots of rumours flying around about how, if and when this will happen. Likely this is where your information about the cards came from. Dealers could be trying to cover their tracks by accepting Canadian cards only.

As Pete notes, there are a lot of quirks and if this is actually true it's a bit of a knee jerk reaction to a rather complex problem. I suspect it will be a time before we have to deal with it.

You will get a kick out of this Mike. I've had Shaw Direct (then Star Choice) since 2000, and loved it in Feb of 2001 when they activated a satellite with coverage that reached Mexico. I had purchased maybe 8 receivers when they first checked to see if I was stacking (sharing with a neighbor). I don't know why they waited so long. In my case, I simply had upgraded and by the time they were through checking, they learned I only had 3 active receivers and that I could not get in front of one of the three because it was in the vacation house. (I had abandoned or thrown away the older receivers)

But when I said, go ahead and deactivate that other receiver, but I sure hope you can activate it in 2 months when I'm at the cottage (and go ahead when I'm at the cottage and deactivate the two at my primary residence) they could see that I wasn't stacking and there was no problem.

It's so much easier to play by the rules.

Yes, the rules are much easier to go by, fortunately here in the Cancun Playa Del Carmen area we have lots of Canadians moving down so it is not as bad of a problem, but I always tell them to watch out there could be an audit. Shaw works great down here. Dish Network has taken a turn for the worse as it used to bleed down South to Tulum, as now it barely reaches full signal right around Puerto Morelos. I have gone to 6 footers and even 8 footers and have no full signal. I have l of angry clients, but what do you expect when living in a foreign country? Well that is my 2 cents worth.

My idea: [from e-mail to another Shaw customer]

3: I have an idea - have a Canadian friend open a debit card account for my/your use and then do a monthly ACH* [from US to Canadian bank] - from what I have read Shaw just wants Canadian payment origin

*The nationwide network exchanges funds and information throughout the 50 states as well as the U.S. territories and Canada with participation by over 98% of the nation's financial institutions, including thousands of savings banks and credit unions. Efforts are underway for the development of a worldwide ACH Network -the Worldwide Automated Transaction Clearing House (W.A.T.C.H). source: http://www.achnetwork.com/introtoach.html

It could work.

What is the source for the claim that Shaw will now accept only payments from Canadian bank cards?

It was an email from a "provider" to a customer here, but was verified as being received by others although I don't believe any were directly from Shaw. It simply stated "Effective immediately SHAW will only bill services to a credit card with a CANADIAN billing address."

Hmmm. I have my own Shaw account. You'd think if this was true they would notify their customers. Their website says they accept VISA, VISA Debit, Master Card, and American Express. No mention of needing a Canadian bank. AMEX is a US company that offers card services world-wide.

Thanks for the confirmation that the US banks work well. I understood that they did, but others had heard false rumors that they did not.

There has been a lot of panic spread by some suggesting that Shaw Direct could not be received south of the US/Canadian border, Etc, Etc.

Oh, and Prorader, it's good to see you posting again. I just got back from the far north a few days ago, and it's good to be back to what I call home.

Several others with US bank accounts, were billed by Shaw Direct as usual. So it would appear that paying from a Canadian account is not needed.
