Setting Google Search to English

Can't Post | Private Reply
I've got a Mexican computer with Spanish language. I don't assume that's the cause but it may contribute.

Anyway ... I use the Google tool bar and search. Every time I set my preferences to English (different search results) it only works for that window. Next day, next window ... it reverts back to Spanish.

Don't really mind but they do offer to SET your preferences

Hi Sparks, I had the same problem in Firefox but with all my Google results coming in Arabic! As I recall, it's a global Google setting, not a browser setting. Here's how I think I fixed it:
1. Get to www.google.com somehow (I kept getting google.com.eg and had to manually delete in the address field).
2. Click on the "preferences" link at the right of the search field.
3. Where it says "interface preferences", tell it English, then be sure to click the "save preferences" button.

Hope this helps!

Kate

I just went into google and changed my preferences to see what would happen. Did you get a query box saying that google.com.mx wanted to leave a cookie? I answered yes and my computer saved the changes. Rebooted and changes were still there. So the answer might be in your security settings for cookies.

My husband suggests going to the English Google site, bookmarking the Google page that you want, and then it should always come up in English.

I too, had the same problem. When I brought down my new laptop from Seattle to Ajijic. Once I got here, it always came up in Spanish. Sure I was given the option to go to "Google.com in English", but I hated the extra step. Every time I clicked on a Google link or typed in www.google.com I would not get that but rather I would get www.google.com.mx

I don't remember how I fixed it but it drove me crazy for a a while. I kept n trying things and finally the problem went away. Now when I try to go to www.google.com I get there with the added option or link added to the page "Go to Google Mexico", which I could click on should I want to go there.

So keep on trying, you will figure out a solution. I only wish I remembered what I did, so I could help you.

I googled it ;) and this is what I got.

How can I get back to the Google homepage in English?

You can access the standard Google homepage by clicking on the "Google in English" link from any of our foreign language homepages. If this does not work, your browser is probably not configured to accept cookies.
If you want to change your Google interface language without changing your browser's accept-language preferences, you can set your Google language preferences manually on our "Language Options" page. However, setting language preferences this way does require that cookies be enabled; the accept-language behavior does not.

Why is Google displaying in another language when I didn't set any language preferences?

Google makes use of the Web's standard language-preferences mechanism, the HTTP accept-language header, to determine the display language. Browsers can have multiple accept-languages, arranged in order of user preference.

To view or modify accept-language in Internet Explorer 5, select "Internet Options" from the "Tools" menu. Click on the "Languages" button to view or modify your current language preferences.

In Netscape Navigator 4.7, select "Preferences" from the "Edit" menu. Expand the "Navigator" heading, and click on the "Languages" subheading to view or modify your current language preferences.

Please note: other websites with multi-lingual capability that support the accept-language header may also be affected by any modifications to your language preferences.

Yep ... done that too. No trouble starting from from google.com either.

It's just after I type in a search word in the tool bar ... there is a preferences option on the google page. It's always set to español and if I change it 'at that very instant' I will get a new set of search results.

Not destroying my life but it's just a pain

Try this link:
How do I stop Google.com from redirecting to another Google domain?

Yesterday by chance I had to clear my cookies for a security reason, and I was back to the old Arabic version. I followed my own instructions and succeeded in setting it back, but the link above explains the issue in more depth.

That's a much better link Morgaine. Thanks. I was just curious about it and that makes more sense. I knew it had to be coming from the IP number because I get redirected when I am using the office wireless connection through Telmex here but not when I am on my satellite connection - both using the same computer. The satellite IP resolves to somewhere in New Jersey I think.

I get round it by using google.co.uk
The only problem is that, if you're looking for products the first page will have mostly companies in the UK.

What happens when you in Mexico set the above link as your home page, Sparks?

Or put it in favorites?

Yer so smart. I should have at least tried that. It's just that I have a favorites page on my website and didn't want to use Google every time I press HOME or open a new page. Using Google English as HOME fixed it.

There are definately different search results depending on where you start. Suppose you could change to somewhere in Europe and get different yet

I find that I have to open each window to Google English for that to work. If a page/link opens another window I'm back to default Spanish/Mexico search

Oh well

Oh well.

I find that every new window opens in the home page.

But I have the default Google.ca as the home page.

Well it was worth a try. Eh?

But you can still put the Google.com in favourites for American searching purposes, and Google.UK for English searching purposes.
