Does anyone know if any of the major satellite companies in Mexico ( Dish Network of Mexico, etc ) offer internet service as part of their services ? If so' does anyone have any experience with them ? Thanks.

Sorry. Your moderator has been setting up his new Dell Laptop with Windows 7, of course, and am glad that there are others who can answer technical questions equal to or better than I.

About the only thing I know about Hughes is that almost anything is better because it is so expensive, so slow and with limitations about how much data you could down/upload. At one time, for an even more expensive subscription you could get a little more speed etc.

UPDATE: I just, using Google, went to the Hughesnet site and entered my Seattle 98104 zip code. The monthly prices have come down and look almost reasonable. There has got to be a catch though, like maybe needing a much larger dish and a US address. I don't know.

Is anyone on this forum presently using Hughesnet in Mexico? If so, do you need a larger dish and do you find the new price scheduling reasonable?

What I saw was after the first 3 months a 5 meg down by 1 up was $50/ month and the most expensive connection at $100 per month, gives you 15 megs down by 2megs up. There was no mention about data volume limitations, which I understand WERE quite restrictive.

Reading on further, some if not all of this new discounted Hughesnet service is on the satellite called EchoStar XVII and can not be received in Mexico. Yes the olderHughesnet Conus beams can be received but I understand do not offer this high end service. It's time to phone them up at

I just phoned, was transferred to an answering service and told to call Monday. I wanted information for my imaginary RV out of Seattle that would sometimes go as far south as central Mexico.

What I think though is that this very fast service and better prices may be on spot beams that would not be available in central Mexico. That is service would be on older and slower satellite delivery systems.

I sure hope my info is wrong and that things are better for Hughesnet in Mexico as well.

Sparks,
How recently have you used Hughesnet? What speeds are they providing now?

Before Hughes started using the new satellite: During the daytime it used to be wicked slow for some users and fast for others.. The slow users then got good speed late at night - which implied that Hughes had server issues - with the slow users being on overloaded servers that would then gradually have fewer users at night, with ultimately good speed in the middle of the night. We gave up on it for this reason.

If the majority of the US users have now moved over to the new faster satellite, maybe the remaining Mexican traffic on the older CONUS beam satellite is now low enough to allow decent speed ?

I think we have not yet answered the OP's question, until we hear from a current Mexican user.
Happy Trails,
steve

HughesNet does have an extortionate Mexican cousin with huge prices and low speeds:
http://www.hughesnet.mx/

Would it be possible to grab the US satellite signal at the US prices from some places in Mexico? One thing we found in the old days using DirectPC (which turned into or was bought by HughesNet) was that our 6' dish in the Caribbean was aimed so low on the horizon to grab the Mexico signal, that if it rained, we lost signal.

Here are some maps showing satellite coverage, not sure if you can use WildBlue with Dish to get internet (didn't read further):

The fast hughesnet and other services made for the states and tightly focused thereon, don't bleed very far over the border. So unless you live close to one of the beams, ie close to that part of the US border it will be very difficult. I've played around with an eight footer near lake Chapala and have never been able to pick up a spot beam but have been somewhat luckier with CONUS or continental US beams which sadly were not two way beams carrying the internet.

For me in the yucatan I use a .98 2 watt system. aimed at and we only have down here SM5 and SM6, works fine. The fastest you will get will be 1.5 down and .5 up. If you have the ability to use in some areas 3G and 4g (LTE) that can be good as well
