Prodigy Questions

Can't Post | Private Reply
I am going for a visit to the U. S. next month, and I have what may be 2 silly questions. I have checked to find out whether or not there are Prodigy dialup numbers where I am going. There are, so that is not the problem. Here is what I need to know.

I use Prodigy DSL service here on my home network. I am always online and always logged in. I am relatively certain that I cannot go elsewhere in Ajijic and log in while the network has me logged in. The question is, will I be able to log in using dial up in the States if my network is still logged on here? Hopefully that makes some sense to someone on the forum. I also need to know if I can use dialup in the U. S. since I use DSL here.

Thanks,
Norma Crosby

I don't think you can. Prodigy US appears to be a different beast than Prodigy MX. For instance, Prodigy US has a news server. I tried logging in to it using my Prodigy MX account info and was rejected. I have to believe the same would be true for dial-up.

I wouldn't be surprised if dial-up wasn't even available to DSL customers, regardless of location (unless of course you paid extra.)

Now something that was a pleasant surprise was my being able to log in to Prodigy's wireless network at the airport in Mexico City, using my DSL account/password.

That's all I know. Let us know if you find out more.

That wireless network at the airport is cool. It was free to Prodigy customers on July 20th when I last past through the GDL airport. Is it still free? Someday I bet they will start charging.

DSL and dialup. I heard that it was possible to keep dialup as a backup, when you updated to DSL. But I wonder if that is actually true. Does anyone know?

What a timely question! A friend who has Prodigy DSL asked me the very same thing last week and I volunteered to call Prodigy to find out for her.

The answer from Prodigy is yes, as long as you are a Prodigy subscriber in Mexico (whether DSL or dial up) you are able to use any Prodigy dial up connection in the USA.

What I've done in the past is pull up the Prodigy page showing the number to connect in the area(s) where I'm going, print out that page (or those pages), and take them along with me. It's worked every time.

That's good to know.

I wonder why they won't let us use the Prodigy news servers in the states then? I just tried again using my account name and then again using my email address and it still failed. You'd think each service would tie into the same database for processing authentications. Odd.

Did you ask if it's unlimited dial-up? Earthlink for instance lets you access dial-up if your paying for DSL, but they limit it to 20 hours@month.

I believe it was free at Mexico City. Then again, the page was entirely in Spanish, so maybe I missed something.

Will know for sure when I get my next bill from Telmex. :/

Yes, it's unlimited dialup. You can use it anywhere in the States that Prodigy has service--and anywhere in Mexico as well. I'm going to Mexico City in a couple of weeks and plan to use it there during my stay.
