Prodigy High Speed Service

Can't Post |
I need to know if anyone has attempted to connect to Prodigy and also connected another computer in a wireless fashion to the first. Would like to know what is possible now that a telephone substation is being built near my home.

I have prodigy DSL and a wireless router. My portable computer connects via wireless; my old desktop connects to the router via an ethernet cable; and my neighbor's teenage son, Chico, connects to my router via a wireless card in his desktop. All three computers can be online at the same time. There may be a bit of a slowdown if all three are doing a download at the same time, but that's pretty rare. I'm happy with the arrangement, Chico is delighted, and his father is relieved to have the kid online for free. Smile

The router (Linksys WRT54G by Cisco) supports having a LAN among the computers. I tried to connect my two into a LAN, but the old box has a problem that prevents the LAN from working even though the internet connection works fine.

I have a similar setup to Rolly. A Telmex supplied wireless modem takes in a 1000bps Prodigy Infinitum service freom them. It feeds my PC on an ethernet cable and two other PC's on wireless cards in an adjacent building some 45' away.

Good service for MN$500 a month.

Go to www.telmex.com and follow the links for ADSL service - they have a locator that will tell you what service levels are available to your phone number.

That is a very good suggestion Adrian. And folks, just because your Spanish sucks doesn't mean you can't use the Prodigy web page. You would be surprised how many of the technical terms that are in Spanish are close enough to English that you can understand them. Some of the prodigy links are also in English. Sadly down here in Ajijic the 1 meg Infinitim service costs 689 pesos (599+IVA).

The slowest Infinitim connection (512/128) that I have as a backup to my WiFi connection costs 401 pesos (including IVA) per month.

They advertise that Adrian's download speed is 1 meg and that mine is 512, and then do not say much about the upload speed, the weak link, for example, when using VOIP.

What type of upload and download speed are you guys actually getting when doing speed tests? The site I like is

http://www.dslreports.com/stest?loc=2

On my 512 by 128 kb/sec Infinitim connection (their slowest infinitim connection) I usually get about 427 by 68 kb/sec. And 68 is getting slow for VoIP upload speeds

On my faster Lagunanet connection which is rated at 768 by 768 kb/sec (same speed up and down) I just got 705 down by 1207 up. Usually though, my download speeds are closer to 720 kb/sec and during periods of heavy usage by the other folks on the WiFi network, I have seen my upload speeds drop to 450 or so, but normally they are above 768 kb/sec

So folks. please share with us folks what type of speed you are getting. And compare that to the advertised speed. And if you are using VoIP technology, are you having any problems at that speed?

Oh my uncle who has a comcast 4 meg connection up Microsoft way (Redmond) has download speeds that are usually at least 2.4 megs and I forgot what his upload speeds are, but as I recollect, they are under 400 kb/sec

When I use http://www.dslreports.com/stest?loc=2, I get 417 x 50

But when I use http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/, I get 423 x 103

Who should I believe?

Gee Rolly, why do you have to ask those hard questions? The only thing I know is that to do a true comparison we all should use the same test site. Using the site you suggested with the server in Dallas, I got an average of 427 by 105. When using my DSL report site 421 by 62

Infinitum 512/128 connection results with DSL reports 421/62 with Speakeasy 427/105
Lagunanet 768/768 connect. results with DSL Reports 710/978 with Speakeasy 730/1342

Some of the difference has to be with how busy the backbone is to and from each site

The down speeds between the two testers are pretty close, but the big difference in up speeds suggests the two testers are using different methods for the up test.

Judging by how fast I can make up loads to my website, I tend to believe the higher number.

2. SpeakEasy Dallas Server (2nd try): 429/101
3. DSLReports SF Server: 417/89
4. DSLReports LA Server: 423/70

I've got a cable modem with a wireless setup
Using Vonage here in Maz.

From the Dallas server

941 down
238 up

I do experience bad connections with Vonage and good connections.
The whole internet system is not perfect. Lots of variables from your hard wire
to everything at the local server. It's amazing it even works.

Someday, I'd like to switch over to my own sat system like Jonna has.
It should get cheaper and better as time goes on.
