Prodigy - using my own wireless router

Can't Post | Private Reply
My husband and I moved to Chapala on Monday, January 8, 2007 and are renting a lovely place in Chapala. The rental came with a phone and line via Telmex so a few days ago we signed up for Prodigy. I need to save money so I signed up for 1 MB "wired" connection and got a free 2Wire gateway. As of 1 hour ago we have service.

I like to think that I know a little bit about computers but I am NOT an expert. I don't want to be limited to using my notebook via a network cable. I brought with me a Netgear 108 Mbps wireless firewall router (wgt624) which I used in the states and would like to use it here.

When I connect the network cable from the 2Wire gateway to my Netgear router I do not get an Internet connection. I turned off DHCP and the firewall but have not changed any of the other settings. I thought I would post this and save myself a lot of time.

Does anyone out there know how to get around having to use Telmex wireless equipment? I don't have the extra $60.00 to purchase their equipment. What settings should I change to use my own wireless router.

Thank you
Deborah

I need some help.

I finally figured out that I needed to configured my wireless Router as PPPoE in order for it to communicate with the Prodigy gateway. This is the first time that I have worked with DSL.

Now my Netgear shows a status of "WAN connected" but there is very little activity - I still can't access the Internet. Obviously there are other settings I need to change.

I looked at the DSL gateway configuration and saw that it had found my Netgear router and had registered the mac.

We are new to town and I don't know who to hire or talk to about this situation. Over the past couple of days I have tried calling the telmex office but I kept getting an automated system. At this point in my life I only speak about 5 words of Spanish so I couldn't navigate through it. Even if I did speak with an English speaking technician, I'm not sure that he/she would help me configure a piece of equipment that I did not purchase from them.

Can anyone recommend someone that I can hire or tell me of another way of finding the information I need? I'm getting desperate.

Thank you,

Deborah

First I am assuming you are living along the shores of Lake Chapala and the info provided assumes that you do. I would highly recommend someone like Juan Barbosa. Juan who comes from Spain speaks reasonable English and has a computer repair shop on the main drag in San Antonio, just about 4 or 5 shops West of Superlake on the same side of the street.

Bless you for responding. I was beginning to wonder if anyone was going to answer my plea. Yes, we live in Chapala. We found Super Lake so locating Juan's shop will not be a problem. I'll go see him tomorrow with printouts in hand.
