For me, one of the things I miss NOB is Netflix. It was such a great service, but because of its dependence on the U.S. postal service, it is at best impractical to use from Mexico. Well, if this story is correct, that is about to change. The idea here is that you get yourself a broadband internet connection, subscribe to Netflix, and then subscribe to TiVO, and you'll be able to download DVD's from Netflix to your TiVO box over your broadband connection. Of course, there are local video rental stores that carry DVD's, but not even the biggest ones in the states have the kind of selection Netflix has, and the ones I've seen in Mexico (yeah, OK, two) are even more limited (the one closest to me has a good selection of VHS though.) Most stores won't offer anything but the most popular TV series on DVD, whereas Netflix has almost every TV series available, which I really enjoy because I seldom tune in to a good series at the very start. You let the viewing public figure out which shows are good, then order them on DVD the year after, and watch each episode of the show, in order, and without commercials! There are few details at this point, however if it is as they say, that is, if you will actually be downloading the DVD -- the full DVD -- we're talking about ~5GB of data. Using my current DSL connection (256Kbps), that would mean it would take me nearly 60 hours to download just one DVD! So you'd probably want to upgrade to like a 1Mbps connection, which costs around three times as much, but then should let you cut down that download time to around 15 hours, which really isn't too bad if you consider that most of that time can be while you sleep. But, depending on how often you'll want to watch a movie, a 256kbps connection might not be so bad. To be successful though they'll need to give you a way of suspending the download. I find that when I'm downloading huge files with my existing connection that performance of other tasks like email and web browsing suffers greatly. To boldly go where no wig has gone before.
