Anyone know where I can buy NFC tags in Mexico City. My only other options are to order from the US or Mercadolibre.

If you can't find them in Mexico, these guys say they ship here.

Also, know anybody at Banamex? They were supposed to have jumped into it if I remember correctly.

I must be getting old. I thought I was a techie. I guess not :) I had to luck up what an NFC tag was. No the NF does not stand for the National Football -----.

Rather they appear to be cellphone accessories. I think, very very small memory storage devices. Could one of you techies explain it to this dumby?

Real simply. They are programmable tags/stickers. For example, when you have NFC turned-on on you smartphone (not available on iPhone, only on some Android phones) and you have a NFC tag in you car, it can transmit instructions to your phone to, turn off wifi, turn on data, turn on bluetooth, run an app, etc. When you get home and have one in you house somewhere, it can turn off data, turn on wifi, turn off bluetooth.

You need an app to program them such as NFC Task Launcher at http://tinyurl.com/bql3h8r

Its future is unclear, but it is being use in stores to purchase products. Rather than use a credit/debit card, one would simply run an app and purchase the product with a touch.

Aside from that, it can keep busy little minds from going nuts.

Don't you have to be really close for it to work? Hence "Near Field."

The range is 20 cm or so. Enough to trigger the app, yet ensure some privacy that bluetooth and wifi do not offer. As I mentioned before in the example of the car, placing the tag on the dash near the radio for example, the tag can trigger the app without a problem.

I've ordered some tags from 'ibushak' in Mexico City so stay tuned for updates.

Thanks for the explanation. I'm an iPhone guy, the iPhone 4. Maybe that's why I had never heard of an NFC tag. Yes I would like to pick up a new unlocked GSM version of a gold colored 5c. But no, I don't need one and second, I will be returning south this week which makes it rather impractical even try to get one at the Seattle Apple store before I return.

So I will stick with my 4 which gives me everything I need.

I believe that the 5S has a NFC chip in it, but the drivers are missing or still in the development stage. The next iOS update will probably have them.
