Hi Speedy, please excuse my ignorance -- what is a "long range phone?"

Hi a long range phone is a high powered cordless phone. It uses a base station hooked up to a phone line to transmit to a remote location. They go up 50 miles. They advertise they will send data. In my case I am three miles up on a hill from La Manzanilla. I have a location where I could put the base station. La Manzanilla has just gotten dsl and I wonder if it would work on the Long range phone. Thanks for your time

I don't know the answer about long range phone but it did occur to me that your situation is perfect for satellite internet, have you considered that?

Easiest is to buy a portable setup in the US and subscribe in the US - you need a US address. Hughes can't sell to you in another country. I pay about $60 a month for unlimited. It's important that you get assigned to a satellite with a footprint for your area, SatMex5 at 117* covers all of Mexico and parts of Central America, other sats cover northern Mexico. They are coming online soon with SatMex6 which will cover most of Mexico, it remains to be seen how well it does in southern MX. For more information start reading this forum which is for satellite internet for RVers, the info is the same though and a lot of RVers are looking for a connection in Mexico, particularly on the west coast. http://www.datastormusers.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi

Another forum that is good for learning about sat internet is http://www.dslreports.com/forum/sat

This initial equipment charge is generally around $1500, you can get it for less but without support. I think that having a dealer that will answer your questions and give you a good manual for setting it up is worth a bit more. I recommend Scott at http://www.dustyfoot.com/ but there are other good dealers (and some really bad ones) and you will figure out who is good by reading the above forums.

We've used ours all over Mexico, Belize and Guatemala. I think you said you are on the west coast near PV? We had ours set up in PV and for months on the beach in Perula south of PV. We are on SatMex5.

Hope this gives you some more options.

I really doubt anything but some expensive equipment would send a signal that far. There is an internet cafe in Melaque trying to offer DSL wireless (or close) but with his existing antennas he can't go beyond the downtown area. 3 of us looked into it but all were about a mile from his base station ... and he can't afford the fancier equipment.

Using 24 dB antennas, we are getting up to five miles using 802.11b technology line of site. The ISP charges about $450 US for the 24 dB antenna, cabling and Ethernet bridge, some of the cost is for installation. I do not remember the cost at the head-end.
