Improved Telmex DSL

Hi all -- for what it may be worth to any of y'all, I was having horrific problems with my Vonage phone and Vonage fax lines and the Telmex DSL at 1 MB.
I need both because I'm still working part time from SOB and as a financial advisor need to download and upload fairly large financial files and also need my fax to work pretty much all the time, and sometimes I also need to be on the phone as faxes are coming in or on the phone and simultaneously looking at account data online.

After much to-and-fro with Telmex and Vonage tech support I finally bit the bullet and went in to Telmex and opted for the 2mb service instead of the 1mb.

This corrected all my problems, pretty much instantly, and it's been fine ever since I did it.

I have this weird theory -- maybe if Carlos Slim gets the extra bucks out of you for upgrading to 2 mb they take the blocks off your VOIP service??!!

Anyway if anyone is going nuts with this, for me, at least the extra cost involved has been well worth it. I've tested the download speed and upload speed and they are, indeed, greatly improved and everything works fine now. (now having posted this watch it alll completely keel over...)

Remember that to get a good quality service with Vonage you need both an upload and a download speed of and I'm guessing here, of from about 90 to 110 kb/sec.

With a 1 meg Prodigy Infinitum connection, you have up to 1 meg down and AND only "up to" 128 kb/sec up. Typically I would get 600 to 800 down and usually about 65 to 70 kb/sec up. With that kind of download speed, I could always hear what the person was saying to me, but with an upload speed of 60 to 70 or so, the the folks at the other end, could not always hear me. I too upgraded to a 2 meg system and have had no trouble. (1.6 meg down by about 120 - 140 up) So the weak link is your upload speed, a problem I do not have with even the slow Lagunanet broadband connection.

Lagunanets slowest broadband connection has a faster upload speed than either Infinitums 1 meg or 2 meg broadband connection.

There are other important factors to consider beside up and down speeds. This link will give an assessment as to whether your connection will result in acceptable call quality:

Brian:

That is a very good point that I neglected to mention. Thanks for reminding the readers thereof. Two other very good URLs that also provide the same service are

www.testyourvoip.com and
www.voiptest.primus.ca/ Oops. It looks like the Primus URL isn't working. For additional voice quality test sites, do an advanced Google search

We all know of course that these URLs are meant not only to provide you a service but to motivate you to buy a service or product as well.
