How secure is your wireless modem?

Can't Post | Private Reply
One of my computer savvy friends visited today and told me how to hack into someone's wireless modern to have free internet access. It seems there are a bunch on little programs floating around that ride in on a wi-fi signal and retrieve the modem's password. They can only retrieve the default password installed by the manufacturer. If the user changes the password, the new one is stored in a secure place where it can't be hacked.
So, if you don't want the kid next door stealing bandwidth while you are trying to watch a movie on the web, change your modem's password.

Many of the TelMex modems can be hacked. It seems that the Network Name that is visible can be decoded somehow and reveal the password. If you have an Android cell phone, an app can be downloaded to allow access to most TelMex modems and others.

Well, that might just account for the slowness of our computer.....we have 2 'net cafes plus a liberal arts school within spitting distance of our home!!
Now can someone please explain how to change the password on a Temex mode????
Thx for any help.

First check the difference between performance when wired and when connecting to your modem via Wi-Fi using say tests like www.pingtest.net and www.speedtest.net and see if the problem is your default wireless settings. Then disconnect your wireless antenna etc. to make it hard for others to steal your Wi-Fi signal and see if that makes a difference.

Often the problems turns out to be something very different than you first guessed. Good luck

Ok, will do! But please have patience with this technology challenged person.......but just what/where do I find the wi-fi antenna My Telmex modem has a white line for the phone line and another black one for what I guess is power with a transformer thingy - that's a technical term I learned one day.
