Does anyone know if you can hook up more than one computer to a gateway infinitum 4200 DSL modem?
do you need a router or just a small hub/switch.

Thanks

If your modem isn't wireless then contemplate attaching a router which could be wireless which is like an extension cord in that it has one cable in (leading from the modem) and most often 4 outlets for up to for wired devices, be they a phone adaptor or more computers.

And sure if it's wireless you can still attach a router, it's just that you may not need to if your computers/laptops are wireless.

It's a wireless one. So it must be a modem router correct? if so then all I should need is a hub or small switch right?
I'm not there right now, still in canada so want to get the right thing to bring down. I have scoured the internet for any reference to this modem and I can't find anything.

Your switch as you call it, is called a router. What you need is a router with several outlets, I think there are almost aways four. The router does not need to be wireless as well unless the router is going to a long was away from the modem, so far that the wireless signal from the modem isn't strong enough to reach the area you want.

Any modem works in Mexico. I bought a few at second hand stores in Seattle for $2 and they worked fine.

The only thing YOU need is multiple network connections (RJ45 cable) on the back of the modem. If the modem doesn't have 4 "Internet cable ports" then most all have a USB port that is just as good

Actually what the OP is asking is "can I just use a hub/switch rather than purchase a router". There is a big difference between the two devices.... and their cost. A hub is akin to using a power strip on an electrical outlet.... it just multiplies the number of outlets available. A switching hub is a more intelligent hub that 'directs' data-flow to specific 'outlets' and not 'all' outlets like a plain hub does. Neither of them, however, will create an independent LAN 'behind' the Internet Modem thus protecting the devices connected to them from (many kinds of) attacks coming over the modem from the ISP. A router will do this.

Having said all that, cmack, I don't know for certain that the Infinitum 4200 modem is a true router just because it has a wireless function. I assume that it does, but.....
