Actually what the OP is asking is "can I just use a hub/switch rather than purchase a router". There is a big difference between the two devices.... and their cost. A hub is akin to using a power strip on an electrical outlet.... it just multiplies the number of outlets available. A switching hub is a more intelligent hub that 'directs' data-flow to specific 'outlets' and not 'all' outlets like a plain hub does. Neither of them, however, will create an independent LAN 'behind' the Internet Modem thus protecting the devices connected to them from (many kinds of) attacks coming over the modem from the ISP. A router will do this. Having said all that, cmack, I don't know for certain that the Infinitum 4200 modem is a true router just because it has a wireless function. I assume that it does, but.....
