I got interested again in finding a better gps map of Mexico when I read this thread. I think there is one other option as it looks like Garmin has a map as well but it is $245 US! Gee, such a deal. I'm leaning towards the Bici map, it looks like it has more detail, seems cheaper compared to the Garmin and will install easily on my gps. If your gps doens't have a card slot, then you might not have the option of the Garmin mexico map. I had looked at the Global Map before and I looked again this time but it still seems short on info and not very up to date. THis is hard to judge on both maps equally as they don't show the same areas but here are some of the things I noticed. In the Global map of the Yucatan that is on their web page, there are roads missing that have been there for close to 5 years now. Specifically, the road from Tulum to Cobá now has a branch that connects to the free road just east of Valladolid, around Chemax. It's a good road but it doesn't appear on the map. Looking at the area around Puerto Vallarta, it looks like hwy 200 goes down to a grey road going north from PV towards the Jalisco-Nayarit border. I don't know exactly what grey means in their map but it looks lighter than the rest of hwy 200 which is a wide red road. In fact the area that shows as grey is great, divided for most of it and it doesn't go to 2 lanes until it starts up towards Tepic. Global says they have 12,000 cities and towns on their map. Bici says they have 45,000. Bici maps say they contain detailed street maps for a whole lot more cities than Global which only claims 4 (DF, Monterey, Guadalajara, Pueblo). The Bici map says:
Basados en nuestro concepto de Mapas simplificados de ciudades, México Atlas GPS incluye detalle de calles de las siguientes ciudades: México DF, Guadalajara, Monterrey, Tijuana, Mexicali, Rosarito, Ensenada, La Paz, San José del Cabo, Cabo San Lucas, Chihuahua, Guanajuato, Puebla, Pachuca, Mérida, Cancún, Playa del Carmen y Cozumel Some of those are of dubious value (a street map of Cozumel? How lost can you get on a small island?) still it is a lot more info supposedly. Detailed street maps to get you through the border cities is worthwhile for sure and they have Mexicali and Tijuana but I'd much rather see Juarez on there than Cozumel. Anyway, that's some of the stuff I've noticed and right now I'm leaning towards the Bici map, the 'normal' one as I don't have a color gps and topo maps in greyscale are pretty hard for me to read. Anyone else's input appreciated.
