GPS Map for Gamin- Global Vs. BiciMapas

Can't Post | Private Reply
Hello

I am about to purchase a map for our Garmin Legend GPS for Mexico

I have only found two sources that will work with our particular GPS unit.

Global Map De Mexico
http://www.gmap.com.mx/es/10_menu.htm

BiciMapas
http://www.bicimapas.com.mx/Mapas_GPS_Garmin.htm

I was wondering if anyone had any experience with them?
I am especially interested if someone has experience with both.

If they are comparable then I think I will get the Global as it is $990 pesos compared with the $145 US$ of the BiciMapas.

Thanks!

Todd

I got interested again in finding a better gps map of Mexico when I read this thread. I think there is one other option as it looks like Garmin has a map as well but it is $245 US! Gee, such a deal. I'm leaning towards the Bici map, it looks like it has more detail, seems cheaper compared to the Garmin and will install easily on my gps. If your gps doens't have a card slot, then you might not have the option of the Garmin mexico map.

I had looked at the Global Map before and I looked again this time but it still seems short on info and not very up to date. THis is hard to judge on both maps equally as they don't show the same areas but here are some of the things I noticed.

In the Global map of the Yucatan that is on their web page, there are roads missing that have been there for close to 5 years now. Specifically, the road from Tulum to Cobá now has a branch that connects to the free road just east of Valladolid, around Chemax. It's a good road but it doesn't appear on the map.

Looking at the area around Puerto Vallarta, it looks like hwy 200 goes down to a grey road going north from PV towards the Jalisco-Nayarit border. I don't know exactly what grey means in their map but it looks lighter than the rest of hwy 200 which is a wide red road. In fact the area that shows as grey is great, divided for most of it and it doesn't go to 2 lanes until it starts up towards Tepic.

Global says they have 12,000 cities and towns on their map. Bici says they have 45,000.

Bici maps say they contain detailed street maps for a whole lot more cities than Global which only claims 4 (DF, Monterey, Guadalajara, Pueblo). The Bici map says:

Quote
Basados en nuestro concepto de Mapas simplificados de ciudades, México Atlas GPS incluye detalle de calles de las siguientes ciudades: México DF, Guadalajara, Monterrey, Tijuana, Mexicali, Rosarito, Ensenada, La Paz, San José del Cabo, Cabo San Lucas, Chihuahua, Guanajuato, Puebla, Pachuca, Mérida, Cancún, Playa del Carmen y Cozumel

Some of those are of dubious value (a street map of Cozumel? How lost can you get on a small island?) still it is a lot more info supposedly. Detailed street maps to get you through the border cities is worthwhile for sure and they have Mexicali and Tijuana but I'd much rather see Juarez on there than Cozumel.

Anyway, that's some of the stuff I've noticed and right now I'm leaning towards the Bici map, the 'normal' one as I don't have a color gps and topo maps in greyscale are pretty hard for me to read. Anyone else's input appreciated.

Do any of the gps programs for Mexico give verbal, turn-by-turn instructions?

Not sure about the others but the Bici map says it does not have autorouting capabilities which I think would preclude verbal routing.

Thanks SFMacaws

Well it looks like BiciMaps will be our choice.
Our unit dosn't take an SD chip so the Garmin map is out.
And I think it is well worth the few extra dollars for Bicimaps to get
what looks like 3 times the data.

BTW Dougakin, the impression I have gotten is that the verbal,
turn by turn functionality is also a function of which GPS unit you have,
not just the map loaded.
But then, this is my first GPS so I wouldnt say I am an expert

Correct. It does depend on the gps unit, it has to have the capability of verbal directions. Still, I think the map has to be routeable in order for a voice capable gps to give directions.

We have a Garmin Street Pilot 7200 and I just ordered Garmin's "City Select Mexico NT v2" SD card which has auto routing capability for major roads and also the larger cities of Monterrey, Guadalajara and DF. Will report back in a couple of months, when we're actually moving down south......

Yes, I'd be interested Elke. I haven't ordered yet, we're in the US until fall so I have some time to consider it.

Hi Jonna, we're still in Colorado. Remodeling our rental and hope to put it up for sale next month. Soon as it sells, we're moving (1 year sooner than projected - yeah!) Ordered the Mexico NT map for the specific purpose of our 3-day drive down and then also for getting around Guadalajara without having to look at the hard copy city atlas. The Street Pilot 7200 is sweet - it has a 7" screen (designed for RV's, bus, etc -), it's great not having to use glasses!

I will keep you posted on how well it works in Mexico. I did find a better deal than $249 - got it for $189 at www.provantage.com.

Whoa! That price looks a little off. All I'm finding are prices from $1000 to $1500 US for the Street Pilot 7200??

ooops.... just realized the price you quoted is for the map software! Sorry.

We're currently in Las Vegas, on our way to Cheyenne WY. We will cross back into Mexico sometime in November. Right now, we plan to stop in Ajijic and GDL but you never know. Hope to see you too Pete, we'll make a point of it if we get there.
