Free Wi-Fi in Mexico?

Are there any free wireless connection spots in Mexico? Starbucks and others offer free wireless connections at their stores in the USA. Anybody doing that anywhere in Mexico?

Rolly, this link will take you to a reply I posted recently. There are several links for finding Wi Fi hotspots in Mexico. There are extremely few free hotspots here. Incidentally, Starbucks does not provide free Wi Fi access nob, they charge US$9.95 per day for access. Almost all the hotspots in Mexico levy a daily charge for using them.

Just as nob, some libraries here provide free access. Another member posted recently that he found free Wi Fi access at every MacDonalds he visited recently in Mexico. I am going to have to check that out here in Cuernavaca, so far, I have only found one free hotspot here.

Hey Rolly. It "AINT" always free. For example most Starbucks outlets in the US, UK, etc allow you access to your T-Mobile account, should you have one, Should you not have one they can sell you a day pass (Or do you have to go to the T-mobile account and pay a one day fee on your credit card? I can't remember)

Here in Mexico, Prodigy has many hot spots. I can connect at the Guad Airport for free any time I am there because I subscribe to Prodigy Infinitum. Those without a Prodigy account would have to pay a fee. Those with a Prodigy dialup account would get a discount.

The home of the Big Mac recently began offering Wifi to their clients. Again one pays for the service, $2.95 US for 2 hours.

Oops You already answered Rolly, Rex. Oh by the way Rex, after paying that $9.95 fee just once, I signed up by the month when I was in the states. ($40 per month by the month or $30 per month on an annual basis)

Here's another one I think I forgot to put in my previous post. It lists hotspots for Mexico.

When I was in Mexico last month, all the Golden Arches (MacDonalds) restaurants I've run across from Guyamas to PV and inbetween where free.

That's good to Know Ron. I didn't even know that they were offering WiFi at any McDonald's in Mexico, and it's free as well. I wonder if they have it at the McDonalds in Guadalajara as well. I'm weird enough to want to bring my old Laptop with me and find out, the next time I pass by my favorite McDonald's on the way to Costco.

It surprised me & Jim as well. After the first one we looked for another in each town we went through and were pleasantly surprised. I don't like their foor but the coffee was ok. We either sat inside or outside in the parking lot.

Pete, a gadget that might be worth buying is a WI-FI finder. I bought one on Ebay a year or so ago when I was buying some other stuff. It is about the size of a remote for unlocking car doors. I keep in on my key ring.

It is very handy for locating wireless connections without the need to start your laptop. It won’t tell you if a hotspot is free, but just that you are in range of one. It has four LEDs on it. When I press the button, the LEDs begin to scan back and forth, on and off. When a hotspot is in range, they stay on. The number of lighted LEDs indicate the strength of the signal. If no signal is found, you point it in a different direction.

Here at home all four LEDs light up immediately when I am in my office where the wireless router is located, or downstairs in the living and dining rooms. When I go to other rooms or outside and get more than one concrete wall or floor between the router and me I get 2 or 3 LEDs. When I take my laptop into those other rooms or outside, I am connected OK.

The one I bought has no brand name on it, or the box it came in. I think I paid 10 or 15 US Bucks for it. There are several brands available; Kensington makes one with a list price of US$25. I have seen them listed for less than that.

It’s kind of entertaining to look for hotspots when my wife is driving and we are going somewhere.

Since I'm not a coffee drinker, I didn't know Starbucks wasn't free. But I guess I'm not surprised.

Anyway, thanks to all for your information which has been very helpful to me in rounding out another one of my informational web pages -- this one on the Internet in Mexico. Check it out here: http://rollybrook.com/internet.htm

As always, comments, corrections and suggestions are most welcome.

Rolly, there are numerous hotels, cafes, and bars, in Querétaro that have a wireless router running that you can tap into.

For example, I often stop by Sorsso (Hotel Mesón de Santa Rosa) or Wicklows on cinco de mayo in the evening for a drink and log on using my laptop.

The WiFinder is a handy device for finding these sites, but they are the sites are so plentiful here that I just sit down order a coffee or beer, open my laptop and give it a try.

Check it out in your town.
