Free Audio and E-book Downloads

Hi, I wanted to share something exciting that I just discovered. For years now, I have been paying a monthly fee to Audible.com to download audio books to listen to. Once you download your choices to your computer, you can either listen through your PC, burn to CDs or (my choice) transfer to a MP3 player and listen wherever you want to. You don't need a fancy, large capacity MP3 player for this. Walmart, Target, Circuit City or most any store will have them for well under $50 and wireless adaptors are even cheaper than that

I am trying to cut back on my monthly expenses in preparation for my retirement next month, so I was searching the Internet for a free way to get audio books. I stumbled across a public city library' website on the East coast that offered free rentals of audio and e-books, so I went to my own city library's website here in the San Francisco, CA area. Much to my surprise, I found that I can check out 5 audio and/or e-books at a time for free. Each book is checked out for 21 days. Here is a link that explains the general concept http://califa.lib.overdrive.com/...licies-Borrowing.htm. When I started researching this, I found that, not only can I use this feature at my city library, I can also use the San Francisco and the Alameda County libraries (anyone that lives or works in California can belong)! I'm rolling in books now! These books are new, popular books, not old, non-copyrighted books. As far as e-books go, there are novels, reference books, cookbooks, guide books (Frommers), etc....

I listen to audio books through mini-speakers in my bedroom as I get dressed for the day, when I do housework, but most of all, when I go on my walks. I listen to them when commuting or driving long distances (using either a cassette or wireless adaptor that allows the MP3 player to play over my car stereo speakers). I still love to read books, but this makes some activities go by quicker.

It seems most stateside libraries are jumping on the digital bandwagon (I don't know about Canada, but I imagine they are too). If you are currently a member, you can get started right away. If not, you need to go in to initially sign up, but then you can live wherever you want. I know snowbirds are starting to head down, so you might want to go by the library before you leave, and then go home and download some audio books, so you can listen to them on the ride down to Mexico.

I have more info, so if you are curious, I'm happy to share!

Diana

Cool find! I just checked our library website in Colorado Springs and they offer the same service!
