FireFox 18 beta is a PITA

I've been on the beta track and besides being a daily nuisance to update it got to the point where it was essentially dysfunctional so I went back to release 17. FF used to be a fabulous browser, but in the last year they've totally screwed it up, so if anyone is having lockups etc. check the ver and if it's 18, step back.

Steve, isn't that the problem with all betas? I'm running 17.0.1 on Ubuntu without problems and I wouldn't want to try the beta. Aren't they making monthly releases now?

With FF it's daily changes literally, it's rare a day goes by without another change needing an update. The reason I went on the beta track was memory leaks on earlier versions which I'm not sure they've fixed yet. The additional thing is that they're moving much faster than add-on updates and so suddenly something you need and depend on isn't compatible any more.

You're right about the leaks and add-on. A while back on Windows, FF was using, up to, 900 mB. On Linux, FF uses less than 400 mB.

When folks are talking browsers. I love to say, you are only using Windows 7 or 8? And then add I use Windows 10 myself, and after they look at me like I'm really stupid, I add yes Windows I.E. 10.

In the January 2013 issue of PC World that I had just been reading until I went to Mexconnect, the article I was reading compared the popular web browsers Internet Explorer 10 with Google Chrome 22 and Mozilla Firefox 16. Now I'm sure some of you will strongly disagree, but they declared the winners to be a tie between Google Chrome and IE 10 with Firefox being 3rd.

Me, what do I like? Well on one Dell I have Internet Explorer and on an HP Firefox. It doesn't really matter to me. It all gets a little confusing to me though when I try to use my older "New" iPad (3). At least the iPad software is like my iPhone 4.

the older I get the more confusing it gets every time I change from one to another.

I don't run Windows anything. I use Ubuntu 12.10 and Firefox 17.0.1. I have Chrome installed and find it clumsy. I do have Windows 7 installed on a small partition (it came with the laptop) and find it slow, but my neighbor likes to use it on occasion.

A note on the Chrome browser. I use Xubuntu and run Firefox in one work area and Chrome in another. Firefox was using around 250mB while the Chrome browser was using over 900mB. I exited Chrome and opened the window that was open in Chrome in Firefox and the memory usage was up to 350mB. Hard to believe the Chrome could be using that much space.

Firefox 18.0 Chrome Version 24.0.1312.52

Thanks for the input. Me, I am so overwhelmed with Windows 8, I haven't got around to deciding which browser to use :)

How am I communicating with you, right now? That's the problem I keep on using my older Windows 7 laptop where I am at the moment using IE. Yes I also have Firefox on the machine.

You have no idea, How happy I am to meet so many people that use Linux (Ubuntu) We should start a club.
Unfortunatly I have to dual boot as Ubuntu will not run any of my games or Graphics Programs. I am slowly moving away from Adobe Suite as Gimp and Kompozer are extremely capable programs. Open office is free and compatible with Microsoft Office.
I wish, someone could do something with the video capabilities I would be in there debt forever. So until then I have to dual boot for Sony Vegas and World of Warcraft.
