Does Jocotepec have a good internet connection?

Can't Post |
Thinking of moving to Jocotepec and wondered what were the internet connection options.

Jack- I'm on Joco-Tek, signed on about 2 weeks ago. I'm 2-3 miles out and am regularly connected at 33.6. I've had very good luck getting on, only once requiring 2nd redial. You gotta use Yahoo or similar to get on, but I've had no sweat with anything. I'm no authority on this but it seems OK to me!

You have a prodigy number in Joco and it is faster than the independent ISPs in town. However, forget about service from about 3 PM till about 7 on any of the phone servers in Joco. Much too busy.
You can get Laguna wireless in Joco and supposedly, within a year, you will be able to get high speed Prodigy.

Of course I've only been on Joco-Tek for a couple of weeks. but as I stated earlier I've only had to redial once! If there was a problem, I'd have done somthing else before now! I find little difference between this and my service in the States! I'm on very frequently too!

You could always hook up at 128 or 256 Kb/sec using 802.11b technology. We've had broadband here lakeside for more than two years. There is one restriction though, you have got to be line of site with one of the Lagunanet transceivers. Right now there is one in El Chante, which is on the northern shores of Lake Chapala just East of joco and covers much of the West end of the lake to include much of Joco. There are other antennas of course in Ajijic and Riberas near the animal clinic on the way to Chapala

I just pretend to be smart. I'm semi retired. I write "tech talk" for the Guadalajara Reporter. To help keep me smart I volunteer to sit at Lagunanet the local WISP, for a couple of hours most mornings and answer technical questions. I would be helping out at prodigy too, if they would have me. It's just that their tech folks are in Mexico City.

The trouble is I can't answer every question the folks have, so I can't call myself an expert. I have to admit that I have become good friends with the folks at Lagunanet and although I try to be fair when I compare them with other ISPs, I am probably a little prejudiced.

Most folks who phone or come in are really good. Every once in a while I meet that individual who knows almost nothing, but proclaims to be an expert, who will not listen and who gets very mad went I suggest that his assumption of what is wrong, just might be wrong. The usual topic is connectivity.

The telephone lines are not always the greatest down here. The telephone modems placed in new computers are not always made for poor conditions. Often persons get cut off. Boy do some of them get mad when I suggest that just maybe it is not the fault of the ISP that they are being cut off.

One guy 20 years my senior threatened to hit me when I suggested that just maybe he was being cut off because of what I mentioned above. He was just not going to leave until I turned some magical knob or switch so that he wasn't going to be cut off every 5 to 15 minutes. He was sure that it was the ISPs method to control the volume of customers. It didn't matter that this was low season and he never got a busy signal when he called in.

I just noticed that I posted on Jan. 26 that I was very pleased with my Email connection with Joco Tek. It's been almost a week now and since that post I have never, not one time failed to be connected on the very first attempt with Joco Tek. I have regularly checked my Email daily including several times daily between 3pm and 7pm! Service is still at 33.6, but I'm at least 3 miles out! I'm not a computer whizz or groupie or anything, but I do think it's very unfair to belittle people who are trying to build a business that you know absolutely nothing about and are totally unfamiliar with! Their service is good!!!!

Thank god you have the right type of modem for your situation and a good telephone line connecting to your server. To the best of my knowledge, all of the ISPs use good equipment, but try to explain that to someone who is always being cut off, usually because of the quality of the telephone wiring or the type of modem he has in his computer.
