Disable Java for security

Lots of chatter about security risks using Java, and they all advise disabling it. I don't use one of the common browsers, but all I had to do was look under "Plug Ins" and disable two Java programs.

Guess what I was just doing before checking activity on MexConnect? Really, I was just deleting both Java 6 and Java 7 from my laptop. I understand that there will be a solution to the Java problem as early as Tuesday. I hope so.

I just got an update to Java tonight, 7.10. I checked again for updates after install, an old habit, and it showed another - 7.11 but would not download it. This is on a mac. To check for updates or to disable Java on a Mac go to the system preferences, there is a Java icon, click that and it will open the Java preferences in a new window.

oops, I just went and looked on the Oracle site and Java 7.10 is the one that has security problems and 7.11 is the solution and it has been released. My error message was no doubt due to busy servers. So, yes the solution is released and it is 7.11

And the question is? Do you really need Java? Only 4% of all the web site use Java and JavaScript is not Java.

Probably not. I just found out that I'm not using it in my usual browser. I use Chrome most of the time and Java doesn't work in it because it is 32 bit and not 64. I haven't noticed a problem and I didn't even know that it wasn't working in Chrome.

Since I deleted my Java software, I haven't missed it. And should I need it, I won't download it until I learn it's safe.

On another matter, although I love visiting WA and BC, I can hardly wait to get back to the land of sun and slower internet speeds. Only 9 more days up here :)
