Direct TV in Mexico?

Can't Post | Private Reply
Does anyone still get Direct Tv in Mexico?
I heard you couldn't get it anymore but a friend of mine in Cozumel just brought down the dish etc because his guy in the states said you could still get it here.
Is there a web site you could go to to get the dish coordinates for Coz?
thanks. I'll pass on any info I get to my friend.

The real short answer is that yes both Dish and DirecTV work in Mexico on some of the satellites providing programming for these two organizations, however the signal strength in many parts of Mexico is weaker with DirecTV than with DISH. So most people choose DISH because it is easier to get programming from more of the satellites providing programming.

Just like DISH, DirecTV uses several satellites for their programming. You have to figure out from which satellites your desired programming comes and whether or not signals from those satellites are viewable in your area.

A great way to learn about most of this, to include dish pointing information go to http://www.lyngsat.com/ and start reading.

Having recently lost my west coast feed for Dish Nework tv and the wonderful LA car chases that my wife so loves, I'm wondering if there is a solution that will get me the west coast again.

They don't have car chases in Seattle as the whole area is totally gridlocked and a two mile per hour car chase just isn't fun to watch, nor are car chases through the snow in Buffalo, so Star Choice is out.

Our friendly local dealer assures me that my only Dish Network tv choice is our NY local programming. However, my neighbor is still getting Denver service, so I wonder if I'm missing something.

Am I correct that Directv isn't really a choice Lakeside?

There is a fellow from Guadalajara advertising in the Guad. Reporter that he can get you networks. Friends from Sayula used him with success - whether he can get you LA I don't know, but look for the ad. If I can find it, I'll p.m. you.

I too love those car chases on the LA channels. You'd never get to chase someone like that in the Bay Area, the lawyers would be out in front of you trying to get the bad guy to sign up with them first.

Here's a company that supplies local networks over a Dish Network receiver to RVers who got cut off by the greedy networks. https://www.mydistantnetworks.com/ It looks to me like they only offer San Francisco and Atlanta though.

The problem is spot beaming, if LA is spot beaming then you can't get it from more than 100miles or so away. Since it used to be a broad beam it may still be available, like NY, but it could go away anytime.

I hate the networks and their machinations to force what you can watch. I also hate the legislators that suck up to them and go along. It's hard to imagine though that someone elected in say Los Angeles, is going to go against the local tv stations on this. Can you say you would never appear on them during elections except as the focus of an investigation?

We just lost our LA stations as they went to spot beaming from broad beaming a couple of months ago. Thanks to you and Bournemouth for the reference to the SF/Atlanta stations. If I lose NY I will try that and may anyway.

I wanted to post a reply Dlyman6500, but didn't for two reasons, 1) I hadn't kept up with what was happening with DISH, and 2.) the ISP where I volunteer, just made a major upgrade. The problem was that they changed DNS numbers, and not everyone got the word before hand or if they did, they didn't know how to change said numbers. I'm glad others with more knowledge than I were able to suggest a solution.

"Our friendly local dealer assures me that my only Dish Network tv choice is our NY local programming. However, my neighbor is still getting Denver service, so I wonder if I'm missing something."

The only way your neighbor is getting Denver locals is via the 129 satellite. These are the HD versions of Denver major network locals. The 129 satellite has all ConUS transponders. It does not have spot beam capability. The SD version of the Denver locals are on a spot beam transponder on sat. 110. Your neighbor must have an mgeg4 HD receiver and a dish pointed at 129. This is really very interesting. No one else has reported keeping a solid lock on this satellite. This bird has "wobble" issues and people here in the US have difficulty keeping a good signal. If you can lock on 129, then you could also get the HD version from the following cities: Kansas City, Denver, Nashville, Albuquerque, Minneapolis, Atlanta, Chicago, and Las Angeles. The only Dish receivers that are mpeg4 are the 411, 211, and 622.

I haven't tried 129 for quite some time just because of the issue you mentioned Tim. I wonder if dlyman6500's neighbor was perhaps watching the Denver Channels via the C Band 4DTV digital tuner.

Right now, my favorite dish system for HD is Star Choice, I need only one elliptical dish for all of their programming to include 20 HD channels and it measures only 36.5 by 26.5 inches

OF COURSE, I'm highly biased, because 3 of those HD channels are the Seattle NBC, CBS, and FOX network affiliates.

Thanks Tim, I appreciate your information. I'll talk to my neighbor now that I know something about the situation. As I mentioned, I'm not sure he even gets Denver anymore since the big changeover, but it sounds as if he may have been set up to do so all along and has had no change. If he weren't evidently, he would not have gotten good reception in the past.

I haven't checked out the SF/Atlanta option as so far everything is good with the NY local programming. I hope that I don't get reduced to Star Choice. I know it is Johanson's favorite, but a number of others feel that it is not the best for them due to the Canadian programming and the choice of US cities from which to get their network service. I have a Star Choice dish sitting on my front lawn if worst comes to worst, though I think that it is not large enough or shaped properly for current Star Choice service.

I have StarChoice and while I would rather have an LA feed or even SF, I can live with Seattle. We get Buffalo NY too, an interesting place that I have never been able to figure out why anyone would live in. It's my idea of the 3rd level of Hell. But, it allows me to watch Heroes twice every Monday night so I catch stuff I would have missed otherwise. I'm happy. That's about the only thing I watch anyway.

Mimi watches GH and she has 2 choices of time for that too. The only other channel I put the TV on when I want to watch it is the H&G channel and it is kind of odd in Canadian but they also have quite a few US shows and quite a few from England. Nothing like watching them fix up a flat in London, the price alone will knock you over. It makes Nob Hill seem cheap.

Jonna, I know you are in Akumal. What is the cost of satellite for you in that area? We are in Playadelcarmen and have Cablemas but, as you might know, the choices are limited even when you include the spanish language shows. We signed up with Cablemas because it was quick and easy; they knocked on our door right after we moved in and offered TV and Internet service that same day, and delivered. As we spend more time in Playa, we would like more TV choices and some news from the Northeast USA would be nice also.
Any suggestions?
Chuck

Hi Heff,

We bring the StarChoice dish and receiver with us in the RV. It works as far south as Guatemala that I've tested. With the basic service you get a choice of 2 network feeds from the US, all choices are cities near the northern border, 2 in the east and 2 in the west. We also bought the NFL package they had to get all the US football games.

Without a Canadian address you need to use a broker to set up your account with SC. It is then billed to your US Visa with no problems. We bought the equipment from a distributer as of course, you have to have a Canadian address for that too. It's not as hard or expensive as it sounds but is easier to do from the US. The problem I've heard of getting it in Mexico is that they don't always realize the LNB must match the dish, you can't just mix and match. We have a .98 elliptical dish although I think they have changed to something different now, ours is 3 years old. If you tell Mike at Global Communications http://www.global-cm.net/ that you want it to work down here he will guide you to the right dish. If you need someone to bring it all down for you, there is a guy here who brings cars and anything legal down for a fee, don't know how much. We call him Redbeard and he hangs out at the Buena Vida in Akumal. He's reliable.

Jonna,
Thanks for the information about StarChoice. It sounds like you have a lot more choices than we do with CableMas. I will try to get what I need in NY and get it back here next fall. Until then, my Spanish lessons will continue on CableMas.
BTW, the Buena Vida is one of our favorite spots for lunch. I will have to check for Redbeard the next time we are there.

I just blogged about Redbeard, you can read it and see a picture of him here, about half way down the page.

He's figured out a way to live most of the time in paradise and still make a little money.
