Could someone help me with an annoying problem that I am experiencing. I sometimes receive email, or postings to the fora, that spread far and wide across my screen. I must then scroll left and right to read the messages. Lately, too, in the middle of writing an email, the same thing happens to me with my own posting spreading all over hell and half of Georgia. I posted a similar message to the Practice and Learn Forum with no response. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. David

What web browser are you using? What version? What operating system? Have you tried a different browser?

My experience is that when wierd things happen on a site, they often go away when I use a different browser.

Hi David,

I need a little more information before I can really help. What operating system are you using? What browser do you use? Which version? Did you make any changes around the time this problem started happening? Does this problem seem to happen randomly or when you do specific things? Is it only when you are online? Is it just the window that gets big or everything on your screen including icons?

Do you have anti spyware and antivirus software installed? Even if your problem isn't malware related, these types of protective programs are always a good idea. I recommend Spybot Search and Destroy and AdAware SE for spyware. Both of these programs are free for private use. They have great tutorials for program use included. The software needs to be run about once a week, depending on how much time you spend on the internet. For good, reliable, and free antivirus, I recommend AVG Free. Scroll down to the bottom of the page for the download.

Hello Ray and Jennifer. Thanks for your responses. I'm not sure I know enough to answer your questions but here goes; my browser is Internet Explorer 6.0. My operating system is Windows Me. My computer is about four years old.

I think that only the windows are expanded but perhaps the icons, etc. are enlarged somewhat. No changes were being made when this occurred. Indeed, I think I have had this problem for some time but the frequency has dramatically increased. Actually, the problem of the page increase, when I am typing an email, started just a few days ago and prompted my inquiry to the fora.

I had both Spybot and Adaware but I did download newer versions after your posts. Thanks again to you both and let me know if if you can offer further advice. David

I have the same wide display problem from time to time on both of my computers.

I also have an occasional problem with the default text editor not accepting input. When that happens, I have found two workarounds: close the browser and start over OR switch to the basic editor.

There are sometimes problems changing a personal icon -- it may take several tries before the system accepts the new icon.

I think the fault lies with Gossamer's flaky software, not our computers.

And, of course, the spell checker is a joke. But there is a workaround for that too -- use the free Google tool bar; it has a very good spell checker. http://toolbar.google.com/?promo=mor-tb-en

May the computer gods smile upon us.

Thanks Rolly. One day I intend to get serious about this computer stuff and maybe I won't be so lost when these glitches occur. I like your seasonly appropriate photo but I do wish you would return the artwork of Frida Kahlo to your wall. After all, Frida is for all seasons. What a story this woman brought to us. Happy holidays Rolly. Dahveed

Hi David,

I realized after reading Rolly's post that I fell into the trap I guess alot of computer people fall into and making the assumption that the problem was with the computer. I peppered you with all of those questions (which you answered great) without asking a couple of important ones. You know what they say about assumptions....

Rolly's post hit it sqarely. I went to Gossamer's site and did some snooping in their forums and then picked through the code for this forum a little bit and found that there is indeed a place where the width of the post windows is improperly defined and can cause your browser to render it weird sometimes. I was able to reproduce your problems on my computer, so I feel pretty confident that the problem is not yours. I was able to make the page render properly by holding down the ctrl button while clicking the refresh button. This forces a complete, clean refreshing of the page. I would not recommend doing this in the middle of writing a post, as you may lose everything you just typed. And, or course, you can always live with it and just scroll :)

Hey Jennifer. Thanks for following up on this problem. I will try your recommendations for sure. It is not impossible to deal with this expanded screen thing but it sure is aggravating. Best wishes for a grand holiday sseason. David
