Thinking about getting an Inspiron 9300 before we move SOB permanently in the next month. Any suggestions?

I recently got a Hewlett Packard zd8000, 2gb memory, 3.6 ghz processor, and I am very happy with it. I was also considering a Dell Inspiron 9300 as a second choice. I beleive both of these computers are good choices in their catagory. And there is less hassle bringing a laptop into México, than a desktop.

I've never owned a Dell but the folks at Lagunanet, the local ISP in Ajijic swear by Dell. The vast majority of their servers PCs and laptops are all Dell.

The entry level 9300 only has 256 meg memory. This is really not enough to run Win XP efficiently. 512 meg is really the minimum you should get. Also, if you plan to do any type of video or image manipulation, you should get as much memory and the biggest hard drive you can afford. I would also pop for the 9 cell battery if you plan to do much unplugged computing. Dells are usually very reliable. By the way, do the extended warranties of the upgraded models apply if you want it serviced in Mexico?? If not, then just customize the basic model and don't pay for the upgraded warranty.

I do not know anything about laptops but I just had to tell about my Dell desk top. Last Friday it crashed. I had my computer man over and he could not do anything. I have only have the computer for 10 months so I called the Dell customer service dept. They ask me to try a number of different things on different screens and then said "your hard drive is broken". They said that they would send some to my house in Chula Vista and replace it and would call Monday to set up a time. Monday morning they called and made an appointment for 5 PM. At about 5:10 the man showed up, put in a brand new 160 GB hard drive, reloaded the factory software, Telmex DSL and left about 6:30. That is what I call service.

Dell is ok, but HP has a better product, and a greatly superior technical support staff. Dell's tech support woes since it move off shore have generate some serious hate mail. Check out PC Magazine's site and do a search to read it.
